My brackets were sized for 7/16" hardware, so that is what I used. I comfortable with the fix and believe it was probably a counterfeit bolt that broke.

When the rear bolt broke, the front bolt held all the weight of the tank. After looking at the break (right at the root of the last thread) I'm going with the idea of a defective (counterfeit?) bolt....
