2010 Forum Meetup Weekend

I like that idea. Been to USAL road but never made it toward Shelter Cove. I'll keep it in the back of my mind...You gonna be there Charlie?

Not if its the weekend that is scheduled. (May 8th) I'll just be getting back from my 4-corners trip. Push it to the 15th and I'd say yes.

We can make it either weekend but the 15th is better for us. Have we confirmed the dates?

I am ready to start loading up.

Keith

I have a very good friend that lives on the Reservation right next to the Canyons Rim , his name is Jeff Terrel and he owns several business's there one of which is the only Towing Service in the area . I spoke with Jeff today and told him of the Forum members plans and he told me to let all of you know that he would happy to help anyone that may be in need . Jeff is one of best and most interesting people that any of you might ever want to meet and his offer would be based on his hope that all would have a great time in the Canyon . If you would like I will get Jeff's contact information for you guy's .

An update on our Southwest trip. We hooked up with a group from Outdoor Adventures USA for a 10-day guided tour through Canyon De Chelly, Red Rock Valley, Monument Valley and Keet Seel. There is still one more spot available if anyone is interested.
Here is a link to the trip details.

As for a Norcal weekend on May 15th, unknown to me, Dina bought tickets for a Giants game that weekend, so I'm booked. I'd be happy to organize a weekend event after that. May 22 is open for me but Dina works that weekend (& every other one). The 29th is okay with us, but it is the three-day weekend. (Good an Bad points) Let me know, PM or email or we could start a separate thread for a California Mini-meet.

Charlie ,
I just got off the phone with Jeff Terrel and he said to contact him with any needs that the Forum group might have when you get to the Canyon and surrounding area .He told me that I should post his web site for all of you http://www.speedysalesandservices.com He and his family are great people and Jeff is the kind of person that never ceases to amaze me with his good nature and resource fullness , I sent him information regarding Military Surplus Wreckers last evening for in the extreme locations that people frequent on the reservation and he told me that the National Park Service is no longer providing any towing service in the canyon due to law suits involving the damage done to the publics vehicles .

We are just starting the planning process to be there 4/23/10 - 5/1/10.
Any interest in touring Canyon De Chelly and or Monument Valley during that time frame?

Just a thought for a Northern California meet and greet location.

Last weekend we did an overnight trip to the California Lost Coast Area.

There was a BML campground that would serve very nicely for meet and greet someday.
Wailaki campground Just cut and paste this into Google maps 40° 0.993'N 123° 59.957'W This is at the south end of the King Range National Conservation Area

  • Accessible for 2wd vehicles.
12 sites can hold 2 vehicles each.
Off the beaten path.  We went in 3 BML campgrounds and only saw two other vehicles on the weekend.
Low cost.  $8 per night.  $4 if you have a annual pass from the feds. (no one came by so we could have skipped out but didn’t)
    Piped running water
    Table
    Fire Rings
    New (relatively) pit toilets
    Trailhead to hiking trails
    Mountain bike trails nearby
Town of Shelter Cove nearby with Ocean and beach access
Class 2 and 3 roads for some easy back-country driving
Nice views, not nearly as spectacular as the Sierras, but nice
    Mattole river for fishing
Close to California Redwoods State Park for scenic drives
About 4.5 hours north of the Golden Gate

Hey, even a Bigfoot Encounter story.
http://www.bigfootencounters.com/stories/kingrangeca.htm

Is the date set for the 8th or 15th? I hope the 15th. The 8th is my last day in Emergency Response & First Aid and I can't miss it but I will be needing a trip anywhere!

Regards,
Keith

We are planning a long trip in our SMB starting in June and would love to meetup with some people who have spent a 2 weeks or more living out of there SMB. I'd be up for something in Idyllwild area or Big Bear area. We are only 2wd so would be restricted to high clearance vehicle dirt roads. I've got a few spots in these areas I park and sleep at and then go rock climbing but no great site for a bunch of SMBs but I'm sure we could figure something out. Either would be less than 150 miles from LA county or San Diego and offer nice tempertures in May. For both a Saturday morning departure is ideal for and both offer lots of good hiking, camping, fishing, Mt Biking, Rock climbing, not sure about 4x4?

I'm up for organizing the suggested May 8th or 1st or 15th. Anyone interested in a So Cal meetup?

After you've spent 3 nights in the SMB, the next 5 weeks are the same, except you have to stop and do laundry once in awhile.

8 weeks is the most we've done. 6 weeks with a grandson along.

Mike (and Dorothy)

So did anyone actually do this (a Local Meetup)? Should I schedule a weekend for next year?

I probably would have tried to do something but my van is in the shop. We've had a late winter out here and some areas normally open now are still closed but it seems like the calender missed for some. Speaking for myself, this time of year is when I'm trying to set up a major trip somewhere. My time slot for crossing the desert regions is between April and June so that's where taking a trip back east factors in. I prefer an extended mini ralley so I can knock out 2 birds with one stone; meet and explore. Reserve one day as the meet/greet for those who just want to say hi and also get in some exploring even if I'm the only one wanting to run some trails.
There are just too few members around me to make it a easy weekend meet and I don't want to take a long drive for one day. I had planned to (and was looking forward to) hitting the coast for the meet up but no van :a8:

i know its last minute, but if anyone is interested in a Colorado meetup I'll be racing in Nathrop (near Buena Vista) this weekend. Maybe some of you front-range SMBers would be interested.

Just a thought.

Gary

I'm pretty short on time for my Yellowstone trip, but I would like to head out there if I can. Do we get to watch you race?

What would be the plan outside of that- is there a place to meet, somewhere to gather and camp?

I'll be practicing Friday and then racing Super-D and Dual Slalom on Saturday. The races conclude around 5:30 pm. Come up and check out the races if possible. The Super-D goes off between 12:30 and 1pm and then DS will run around 3-5:30.
Sunday, I'll be hanging around to take some pictures of the other races so I'm open to meet up any time that day.
I'm open to any suggestions for places to meet up on Sunday, since its so close to Buena Vista and Salida.
There will be plenty of cold Durango micro-brews in the SMB for everyones enjoyment......
