air locker question?

Dropped off my van today for a FF axle swap. Trying to figure out if I do LSD or a Locker in the rear on the new axle? Already have the compressor. When the van was converted in 17' I had an ARB air locker installed ARB #RD169 with 4.56 gears according to my bldg sheet. When shopping for lockers today. I noticed that locker is for 4.10s and below. I had to have the dif rebuilt in 2020. That locker was shredded unusable, and wait time was 3-4 weeks for a new one, and didn't have time to wait. So had a Yukon posi installed at the time. Wondering if it's possible if putting that locker in during the conversion for 4.10s and I have 4.56 could that have caused the destruction of my diff and the locker? Or does the gear ratio not matter?

Sorry let me try to clarify. I've had 4.56 the whole time front and rear. Never have had anything different. During the conversion in 17' and the rear diff rebuild in 2020. The orginal conversion according to my invoice used a ARB locker that says it's to be used for a 4.10 and below gears.According to the ARB website. So I'm wondering would installing that locker originally possibly be a major contributer as to why I had to rebuild the diff in 2020 and couldn't reuse the locker as well then. Because they used a locker intended for 4.10 but I have 4.56. Hope that helps?

ARB's are pretty robust, most failures (aside from neglect) have to do with the pneumatic bits and are replaceable.


Dana 60's are so popular that they have made custom 'skinny' gears to fit 4.56 gears on a 4.10 carrier or 'fat' gears to fit 4.10 on a 4.56 carrier. If you had the wrong combination it would not physically fit.

Snow / Ice / Rain / Slick => LSD
Sand/ Mud / trail crawling => Locker
