When you say 'not 2wd friendly', is it because of the soil, or because of terrain and ruts? My Ex is 4wd, but stock suspension height (actually, probably lower than stock due to age).

There's a good chance my annual two week Summer camping trip with my son will have to be dramatically scaled back this year. 4-6 weeks ago it was a new radiator for the Bronco ($750 after all was said and done), then last week the alternator on our Ex went out while I was on a busness trip. My wife got it squared away, but there went another ($450). This week, we finally are getting our VW Passat diesel back (EGR cooler and warped cylinder head, and it's not even a 6.0L) to the tune of $3600. A two week trip, just in fuel costs alone, doesn't seem like a prudent thing to do in the near term, so I'm thinking that I'll keep the campground reservations I have near Mammoth, and then maybe tack on a couple of days afterwards in the Alabama Hills.

Now that I think more about it though, mid-late June in the Alabama Hills will be hot.

I'm curious about the necessity of 4wd as well. We spend boatloads of time in the Eastern Sierra and are always looking for new spots.

A lot of spots to camp there that don't require 4wd. Just the specific spot we were had terrain and ruts not 2wd friendly. Dirt was firm.

Stayed in the exact campsite last summer. Its a great spot.
