Disabled Explorers is fullfilling a "bucket list wish"....not that our participant is going to die anytime soon. He just has always wanted to see the Grand Canyon and the Wheelchair Accessible Van for Expeditions will allow him to really enjoy his adventure. However he has a limited schedule for travel so..

This will be a fast dash from Phx to Toroweap on Friday March 19th, some hanging out and maybe driving on Saturday, then a slower return on Sunday checking out some sites along the way.

We are opening up this trip to 3 other rigs who would like to join DE, of course 1st preference will go to folks who are willing to donate to help cover the cost of getting our participant the trip of his dreams, or if you are willing to be the picture taker, video shooter or such.

Re: Disabled Explorers North Rim of the Grand Canyon March 13-16

A fast dash on that road to Toroweap in March?

Call the ranger station in St. George first.

They don't even grade it until late April, do they?

good comments and thus the reason for posting...
I will make some more phone calls, my first look into the route showed no issues.
Thanks for the tip on calling St George

The SW deserts have been getting tons of snow this year, it might not be clear that early.

I'm in New York, but should be out west in May and would love to find some people here who'd like to do the Mojave Road.

11 days till our adventure..the forecast has a 60% chance of rain a couple of days before our outing, I really hope it either doesn't rain, rains lightly or rains and passes before we get up there :)

As much as I would like to reschedule this we are locked into our participants travel plans which can't change.

It would be good to have another rig along for safety and security..anyone willing to take a Friday off work and come have some fun with our Canadian visitor?

Funny this came up
I JUST left Ricks Trailer Supply here in San Clemente, CA
and Paul was checking out my transflow readout display
and told me i just GOTTA to to Toroweap

If anyone else mentions it that will be three times, and i will
have to Jump in Wilson and go now !

From St. George it is 90 miles of bad dirt road. And they probably haven't been plowed yet this year. No services, no water, no food, pit toilets, handicap accessible. And worth the trip. Been twice and will go again.

As mentioned above, call before you go:

Toroweap (Tuweep) is a marvelous place. Where else can you camp in a National Park for free? And have views 3000' straight down to the Colorado River?

"Toroweap (Tuweep) is a marvelous place". Indeed it is.

I love the place and so wish I could get additional time off. Really hard considering the Oexpo time and four weeks this summer, and it's my anniversary weekend.

Anyhow no matter the conditions.........have fun, be safe.

More Tuweep pic's in my gallery.

After reading all the great reports about Tuweep, I went in Sept. '08 and was surprised at how good the road was. I expected to have problems but of course it was much later in the year. The roads were in very good shape. I only stayed 2 nights and drove out to St. George. Everything about the trip was excellent.

Bill, I guess this is the third time so you'll have to go!

I'd love to come do it but I'd get stuck. You got any other runs coming up soon?

Hey Joel,
The WAVE would be happy to tug you out of any pickles :)
Nothing like having a wheelchair dude lead a recover effort.

As to upcoming adventures..
Mid May is a 4 day southwestern Utah outing with a disabled vet. He has always wanted to wheel Utah so we will play around Glen Canyon or Zion...not sure as he is still planning his trip.

summer might have something very interesting in southern Colorado & New Mexico

fall will be Mojave Rd and Death Valley

And of course I would really like to get a wheelchair dude to Baja or if not there is another killer project in the works to get a double amputee in Baja some new legs.

Yeah that is it..
I met him in Nov and we talked for a while (I am a spanish speaker even though he has pretty good english).
Found out that he doesn't wear his legs due to fit issues.
Went home as talked to my prosthetic maker, got the names of some of the reps of the parts makers.
Now trying to setup a time to go down there and cast his limbs, then have to go back and test fit him, then go back and make adjustments.
It will take 3-5 trips and 3-4 months I think to work it out.
Not likely to happen until May or June I think...alot of ducks to get into a row.

There are 2 big issues, 1) he is impatient :) and not alot of residual limb to work with
2) double amputees have it tough no matter what.

I am also looking into a set of used hand controls that can transfer car to car, he currently uses a ATV and when driving a car/truck a leg he made himself and a couple of sticks :)

Super cool dude. Not for sure we can make something happen but it would be nice if we could...cost coverage will be the big issue..what I can't get donated will have to come from Disabled Explorers...which really means my overtime shifts as we have never seen much in the way of donations.

Yeah, Coco is a pretty neat guy. Can't believe how he gets around, but losing the second leg sure has slowed him down. I don't know anything about prosthetics, but I'm within an hour of his place if I can be of any help.
