Down sides of a 4x4 5.4L van!?

I say wait and get what you want. If you’re going to be investing a lot of money into the van and plan on keeping it for a long time, then why not do it right? Get one with rear AC too!

Had sorta the same issue as the OP. I didn't want a diseal searched all over for a V10 for over a year. Settled on the v8. Nice engine works but doesn't have great power. My van 6" lift 35s 4.56 gears 9k wgt van couldn't imagine having less than 4.56 in any mtn area. Seems so far reliable. To do it over again would hold out for a newer v10 with how much $ all of us invest in these things. V10 resale better as well.

We are planning to do a coast to coast trip this summer, hoping all the stuff I want will get here in time for that voyage.

Oh wow. Barn doors, EB, V10 with 5r110, 53k miles, cargo van but has power windows + locks, rear hvac, and it's not white. That's a good find.

Do upgrades like a 5star tuner help the 5.4 much? Seems like a relatively low cost upgrade if someone cant find a V10 they like and want a bit more power out of the V8

My plan is to convert and extended unit to 4x4 on 35's with a hightop. i dont plan on towing anything. Maybe a smaller utility trailer with a sled or quad a time or two but that would be it. im going to dig a little more into some small upgrades you could do to get a little more power/torque. With 4x4 a hightop and 35's i don't want to bag the life out of this thing every time i head through the mountains.

Agreed. While $10K is not exactly "cheap" that looks like a good starting slate for a conversion.

It can take time to find the van you want. I searched for almost 20 years before stumbling across my '92 E350 7.3 IDI conversion van. While some aspects of it are a compromise, every van is.

To my mind after having read all the benefits of the 5 Star Tune's the biggest one---at least relating to the 5.4--is being able to better dial in the shift points of the transmission, whichever version you have installed.

While the 5.4 isn't a V10 nor a diesel they seem to have adequte power for most uses I've seen described or shared here. Acutually I'm pleasantly shocked they fare so well in the SMB world especially with a 4x4 installed package.

Mike at 5 Star is always open to discussing how to customize any tune he'd provide to best suit the individual user. Its a $500 (+/-) electronic modification that's easily installed and reversible without a lot of effort. The testimonials on FTE say so much about this product I'd not be too hard to persuade into plopping my money down.
