Get Together Vegas/Southern Utah in Sept(TRIP REPORT posted)

UPDATE: Mac and Mike are inviting any Sportsmobile Owners to join us in a fall Sportsmobile trip to Zion, Toroweap and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. You can join any or all of the legs of the trip as it fits your schedule. Here is the plan:

Zion National Park on the weekend of September 17-18. We will be in the South Campground (no hookups) which is first come first served. Mac will arrive early to grab the campsites. Please email mac (mac@imglv.com) and let him know you are coming so he can get a campsite for you.

Toroweap September 19-22. Mike has reserved a group site.

North Rim September 23-26.

I will just be at Zion. I hope to see others there!!!!

We might be depending on the timing. It is usually pretty nice up here in September but the weather usually turns by October so a little sun in the Southland would be great.

Toroweap is a great place to meet. I was thinking of the North Rim campground, but Toroweap is fine by me. And it will be a wonderful destination for anyone who hasn't been there. There are only about 12 campspaces, but with SMB's we could double or triple up and fit more.

It turns out my wife is leaving for Panama on the 6th of Oct. And I have to be home to feed the critters while she is gone. So, late September will work much better for me.

I'll bring firewood.

MMM! Have never been to GC. North Rim...YES. Put me down for North Rim late Sept./Oct. I'll bring some firewood too. If someone can nail down the date to rendezvous great!

If that doesn't work or anyone has other ideas, make suggestions here.

There is pleny of camping available at the North Rim Campground in Sept. if anyone wants to visit before or after Toroweap.

I've sent a message to inquire about the Toroweap group campsite.

I can be there the 22nd but would have to depart the 23rd. I'm 900 miles from home and due back by the 25th. I could do the weekend before or Oct. anytime after the 2nd. Not looking too good for me!

I'm flexible on the dates. We could go earlier (19-22?). After we firm them up, I will probably make a reservation for the North Rim either before or after Toroweap. Maybe Zion too.

Anybody else have date constraints? Or preferences?

Anytime from Sept. 13th up top the 22nd works for me. Or later after the 1st Sat. in Oct. With 4 days of driving I'm planning on 8 to 10 days total depending on weather etc.

I'm going to stop in St. George at the ranger station and ask about road conditions. There are basically three ways in/out and they vay from 60-90 miles of mediocre dirt roads. Last time we werethere 2wd could make the trip. Just avoid the dustholes out of Colorado City or take a different route.

From St. George it is longer and there is the risk of snow over Mt. Trumbull. Nothing worse than washboard on this route. 90 miles and we did some sightseeing on this route and took 6 hours. A little scary going 6 hours out and hoping to find space available in the campground.

From Colorado City it was shorter, but the road had really NASTY dustholes. Big (10') deep (12") holes filled completely with dust. I could only see them because the dust had settled completely flat on top. 60 miles 3 hours.

From Fredonia it was fairly easy. No big surprises when we went this way. 60 miles 2.5 hours.

Suggested maps are:

- AAA map of Southern Utah

- BLM map of the Arizona Strip

Lets say I will be there from the 19th to the 22nd. And I'm going to make reservations for the North Rim the 23rd to the 26th.

I could meet you as you head in on the 19th. Which route? Timing works for me to arrive the 18th or 19th.
