"The generator SMB adds to the Fords goes in place of the underfloor storage or factory spare as it were (they are the same place)."

The SMB's I saw in Fresno, and the rescue vehicles sent to Qatar had Onan generators. Onan has underfloor mounting kits for specific models. The generator was mounted right behind the rear axle between the frame rails. It looked a lot further forward than TwoLost's.

Look for photos of Twolost's rig. The big yellow thing under the rear bumper is the generator.

Decided against cuz i dont want the whole rig to vibrate and hum
JMHO

It doesn't. Vibration is really not noticeable and the humming inside, is not intrusive and doesn't require you to raise your voice to maintain a normal conversation.

Outside is a different story altogether. Loud enough that I try to park away from neighbors to avoid bothering them. I don't understand why they don't fit these things with a muffler.

I tried to take some pictures of the generator under my van, but the lighting just isn't there for the pictures to work. The doc's posted by J.Whitbread are probably better and more descriptive than anything I could have come up with anyway...

So who removed the undervan tire carrier? SMB? or did the vans come without one?

SMB removed the existing undercarriage tire carrier and installed the genset and an Aluminess tire carrier in the rear.

This is the best image I could find. But you see where the fuel tank is located on this. This is the spot I've seen the generator installed. The spare tire goes further back. Under my van, an extended van with a spare tire, this space behind the axle is open.

It's a better location for ground clearance and load distribution.

I figured I may as well post my crappy cellphone pictures, even though the rest of the information in the thread is more informative. I overexposed the pictures as much as I could so something would be visible...

Here's the generator as seen from behind the van through the space between the hitch and the bumper:

This one is from the rear looking up and you can (almost) make out where the exhaust pipe leaves the right side of the generator on it's way to the left side of the van. The little flat spot diagonal to the front is where you gain access to change the spark plug and if you look really, really carefully you can almost see where the green begins, a black cover which you would open to check the oil and change the air and fuel filters. If you can't see it, you can take my word for it, it's there.

This is a view from the left side, and you can see the oil drain plug, the exhaust on the left side of the generator "box" and more or less where it is located in relation to the van's exhaust.
