I was tempted

Hey. Random/quick forum community "personal valuation" question.

If another van was for sale right now, and identical in all ways to this one (color/interior/year/mileage/condition) but had a V10 instead of that 7.3.....how would you value that one by comparison?

Less?
Same?

....More?

I think all things being equal maybe a grand more for the 7.3, but only because it's the "impossible to find" 7.3.

Interesting question. I'd say about the same value, but at the same time, a very different pool of customers.

I was actually thinking about what engine I'd go for if I bought another van. As big of a fan as I am of the 7.3, in a van I'd go for the 6.0L or V10. The 7.3 is just down too much power without the intercooler, and the 5R110 is such a great transmission.

... and the 5R110 is such a great transmission.

I think you only get the 5R110 in 2005 and up.

I currently own a V10 passenger van and I've driven a couple 7.3 vans. The two 7.3's felt like snails compared to my van. Like I thought something was wrong with the 7.3's because they were so slow. Maybe it was because I don't have any experience with diesels, or my expectations were much higher because of how much people loved them. I don't know. I must admit, when I see/hear a diesel van drive by, I always look at it and envy the beefy sound it makes driving by.

I feel like the V10's are gaining popularity because the 6.0's have a horrible reputation and people feel the 5.4 is under powered for the size of vans. With that said, I don't think the value of older V10 vans are anywhere near the value of 7.3 vans. People put some serious premiums for the 7.3. I think a clean 2003 passenger van with a V10 will top out at $10k-$12k.

You need to at least put an aftermarket tune on the diesel and do something about EGT temps, (water injection works pretty well) and then the 7.3 shines! Change the turbo and it's even better. The 7.3 will pull pretty good at 20+ psi of manifold pressure and plenty of fuel.

Stock I agree, it feels like there's something wrong with it.

I really wish ford would have put the 6.7/6r100 in the vans. That is a quiet, powerful setup!

I will respectfully point out that you just committed blasphemy Herb. This could be serious.

The good news is the 6.0 operators are an accepting group so you'll be OK. We just don't have much money left.

Disclosure: I too, have just ventured into the 6.0 land for a little bit. I must say, I have been impressed with its driving manners. Having had a V10 for many years and our 7.3 for almost four years, I can fully understand Herb’s post.

The 2005 V10 EB (3.55) I had, I put the 5Star tuner and holycow fast.
The 2003 7.3 EB (3.55) I had with DP tuner was fast when it worked, twice.
The current 2001 7.3 EB (4.10) has full 4in exhaust, WWII and a 5Star tune and its faster than the others.
7.3 stock is painfully slow... the 6.0 is quick stock and very fast when massaged but takes some serious $ to make it last.

The 7.3 will always demand a higher price because of it's reputation, longevity and cool factor. As for how much... tough call. All things equal except for motor, $2-5k more.
