Interesting rig. If it weren't a 6.0 diesel...

I wouldn't be concerned if I knew that he had taken of the proper preventative steps, but there's no mention of any of it. Might be low enough miles so it hasn't been an issue YET.

That is one exceptional go-anywhere gypsy wagon!!!
It's almost like getting an Earthroamer for 15-year-old SMB prices.

The dark shadow of uncertain reliability (and/or expensive updates/fixes) looms large over anything with the 6.0 engine though, doesn't it. If you go to the Wikipedia page for the 6.0, they state flatly/unequivocally "many of the 6.0 L Power Stroke engines experienced problems"....

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Power_Stroke_engine

Still, if you've got the additional ~ $10k - $15k at the ready for any possible 6.0 woes/needs, that thing is still pretty darn rad.

Quick Rant:
Why so many rigs listed for sale lately without any mention of their total mileage? That's critical info. Don't see how sellers can overlook listing that (or that perhaps they can think that their rig is somehow SO exceptional that the mileage on the chassis/drivetrain doesn't matter....which is ridiculous, especially with these 6.0's......)

:)

That dealer has a few interesting campers on the lot. A lot of Freightliner (semi tractor) conversions. Not Freightliner Sprinter conversions. It's off I84 by Mountain Home close to Boise.

6.uh oh isn't that bad an engine. I've had two 7.3 before my 6.0. Looking back I put just as much money into my 7.3 as I have for my 6.0 both for different reasons 7.3 to make them million mile engines & 6.0 to address the reliability. Yes it has its problems, but if addressed 6.0 is a solid engine...I'd say that the negative hype of the 6.0 gets me thinking about its reliability but I know it's just hype since it's been addressed. Seller probably has had to do anything because mileage is so low,

Living in California, the 6.0 question I wonder about most is "how can you reliably bulletproof one of those here, where CARB (California Air Resources Board) smog laws won't let you do an EGR removal or bypass?"

It seems that the EGR in particular is a major element that gets spoken about as an Achilles heel, these engines don't like to idle for very long before the stock EGR systems starts to foul and cause other issues. Aftermarket has indeed seemingly solved this problem handily for States that allow modifications to emission-related systems, but it seems a far cloudier proposition when considering a 6.0 for California use/registration.

Are there CARB-approved EGR remedies for the 6.0 ?

At the end of the day, a modified 6.0 would have to pass the exhaust-gas sniffer tests for registration here too. A missing EGR would almost certainly throw the emissions out of acceptable spec.

EGR is only an issue if you idle a lot a lot. By 05 they had already worked most stuff and by 06-07 those motors were pretty dialed in. Best thing you can do with these engines is get em warm and drive em like you stole em.

Only reason I would be wary of that 6.0 is because it was tuned and might not have had the necessary upgrades.

How many 6.0l SMB's are out there?? How many come up for sale??

Not sure about specific CARB specific approval, but there aftermarket, improved EGR coolers out there like BulletProof Diesel. Last I knew CA smog checks were a visual check on the equipment. I had a BPD EGR cooler installed in my SMB when I had the Ford oil cooler and had no issues afterwards with CA smog check.

I have no EGR & I pass at the pipe here in Colorado but fail the visual inspection because of no EGR. I'm grateful I have a place in Oregon & spend enough time there to legally keep the van registered in Oregon. That being said 100% agree that the 6.0 isn't a good match for Cali residents. I wouldn't want a 6.0 unless it had the EGR delete.

As of last year you are now required to get your 6.0 hooked up to a diagnostic machine for the smog check in California. The visual days are over. It will fail you for a missing EGR.

Although not a 6.0 Ford, I have a 2006 Jetta TDI, where we took the EGR cooler and fixed the internal failure points, and left the entire system visually in tact. The 49 state folks don't bother, but us Californians have this unique, um, problem. I wouldn't be surprised to learn the Ford 6-oh guys have a similar solution.

If it were me and I lived in CA I would just run a BPD EGR cooler and use an SCT tuner with a PCM tune that turns off the EGR valve. You still have coolant running through the EGR cooler but your not dumping soot into the engine. Turn it back on for the inspection.

The issue here is mostly the coolant so if your maintaining the Ford Gold and/or using an ELC with a coolant filter then you've done what you can to keep the oil cooler from clogging with silicate sludge and casting sand. It's restricted flow through the oil cooler that causes the EGR cooler to rupture.

My first thought about it being a 6.0 was, at least it's in a pick up truck engine compartment. However, they hosed themselves with the camper overhang so the normal lift the cab technique is not really an option.

My solution to smoging my 6.0 in California was to move out of California. The twist is here in El Paso County the only vehicles that get tested are diesels. However it's a ridiculously easy test to pass.

My 6.0 has the EGR delete and passes our county's OBD2 emissions test with the stock tune on. It passed in Nevada before I bought it and passed here in Idaho. It was deleted before I bought so not sure how it passes but it does.
