Spent last week camping in the van. Started at Clear Lake ca, then down to the Redwoods north of Santa Cruz. Then to Sunset Beach south of Santa Cruz.

To my surprise we did not see a single SMB out in our travels, however, did see probably the highest concentration of westfalias I've ever seen in Santa Cruz. They were everywhere. Just reminded us of why we love our van so much.
Size advantage.

Snapped this pic while cooking up breakfast thought it was a cool perspective.

I drove and camped in Pepe, our 1978 Westy, for many years before I got a Sportsmobile and we attracted a fair amount of attention.

I was not prepared for the onslaught of gawkers and curiosity hounds that seem to descend on me every time I park the van in a new spot. Although Westys in nice condition are remarkable, there are just so many of them in California. Not so with Sportsmobiles. Plus, comparing a Sportsmobile to a Westy is like comparing apples and oranges, or more accurately, apples and watermelons.

Yes, Santa Cruz is the world capitol of VW vans, and public pot smoking, have not been able to go anywhere lately without the kids complaining about it....

Congrats! You driving it to the lower 48?

Camped last weekend with a buddy who has a perfectly restored 69 Westy. Found a perfect spot too, but 15 miles of rough gravel in for us both in 2WDs. Even so, we'll be back.

Puts some perspective on things.

(If we'd bought the winch, we'd make a fortune pulling cars out of the snow.)

I'm driving across the country, from CA through NV, UT, CO and I've seen 3 SMB's and about 20 VW Westfalias and 5 VW Eurovan conversions.

Where are all the SMBs???

I just got mine out of the shop

Speaking as somebody who has owned both (see photo) the answer is simple we are all at work paying for the new vans and all the VW owners are living the dream in one of the cheapest vehicles to own and repair I ever owned.
