Kansas City?

I have some friends back in Indy who we camped with in the Great Smokey Mountains. They were talking about this years trip and I said, "Hey, how about we meet in Kansas City?" It's the same distance +/- for them and only 9 hours for us.

Problem is Kansas City is somewhere you drive through going somewhere else. We're all aware it won't compare to the Smokies or Rockies, however does anyone know of good camping, preferrably free, 4x4 inroads a plus. Something a Suburban can handle.

Any ideas?

Jage, you might try something around the Flint Hills in south central Kansas. I don't know of any specific camping places, but it has a lot of native prairie preserves and some scenic drives.
