Maxxair in older popup

I have a 97 e150 with a fiberglass popup out of Fresno SMB west. It seems a little older than what Ive seen on other SMB photos. Have not seen or heard of a fan on a popup. My question is it ok to put a Maxxair on the popup. The difference in layers has me Iffy. Though the fan does seem wide enough.

Officially SMB says don’t do it, but some have. I’m planning to give it a go at some point (my PH top is flat, which should make it easier).

I've done 3 or more. Why SMB doesn't do this to begin with is beyond me. It's an easy install you will love from day one.
