NON SMB- Hemi in old Dodge van

Hi,

Somebody in here wanted to see a modern Hemi in an old Dodge van.

I took these this summer at Vanfest. The van cruises effortlessly. Ice cold air thanks to a huge remote mounted condenser.

Great mileage according to the owner Ron. He used a truck motor and even kept the catalytic converters.

All done in his shop for a customer who then sold it back to him years later.

I ran in to Ron and his 1977 B200 with Hemi power last weekend at Vanfest.

The rear quarter panels were covered in rubber shreds.

He was at the local drag strip on Saturday.

great upgrade. I have an old 1979 chassis 1981 Dodge Broghum (21 ft). The biggest problem is the new gas vapor locking and un-rebuildable Carter AFB

Shoehorn doesn’t really touch on how snug that swap appears. Did you build or buy an “install kit”? Very cool regardless!

Built every tedious bit of it.

Auxiliary gas tank with injection pump and gauge sender to match factory gauge ohms.

Exhaust with converters.

Second alternator for house battery.

Downshift cable and throttle cable boxes.

Engine mounts.

Transmission crossmember and mount mods.

Custom transmission dipstick tube.

Overdrive and lockup controller using governor pressure and vacuum switch.

Reworked modern power steering pump to lower pressure.

New PS cooler.

New transmission cooler, inline filter, and hard lines.

Moved radiator inlet and added anode to old inlet.

Rad shroud mods for electric cooling fan.

Rebuilt both alternators.

Separate adjustable voltage regulator for house battery.

New fuel lines.

Engine in and out 4 times. Through the front end without pulling the oil pan on either engine even though factory says it and oil pickup must be removed.

Drove it today with the vacuum switch running the overdrive sorted out and the doghouse on.

Wow! First time with 4.10 gears and a tight PATC transmission. So much fun to run through the gears. And then let it flop into overdrive and watch the revs fall way off.

Versus the 1979 440-

Floor much cooler.

Firewall much cooler.

Quieter as the exhaust manifolds are one piece and sealed. No cracks.

Smooth. Idles at 625 rpm like a Swiss watch. The power comes on in a linear fashion. No sudden "carb is now working right" feeling. 345 horse versus 185. Same torque though. Much more usable power and torque. My rural neighbors may get sick of me running it up the nearby hill.

And it starts in 2 seconds every, single time I hit the button.

I also use my Bluetooth dongle on the OBDII port to see what is happening within. Try that on a 44 year old Thermoquad!

Bouchillion Enginnering replied it was good to see people swapping hemis into "interesting vehicles again."

The others were happy to see a quick startup video.

Plus, as usual, so many people said "you can't do that" and that just sets my horns straight out.
