does anyone have any experience with shipping a SMB from the Seattle area to Prince Rupert, BC and points inbetween other than the well known ferry systems ?? what I'm looking for is a carrier possibly out of Port Hardy etc
that has a vessel that could make landing on the coast...much like power boaters and kayakers do, and we could use the SMB as base camp on shore
to photograph wildlife and the enviro...

I live about half the year on a small island about 50 miles above Vancouver. I see barges going up in that direction every day. I'll be at my cabin on about the 12th or 13th and will ask around and find out how to put a van on a barge if you like.

That sounds like a cool idea!

thanks for your tip...a guy on steep island gave me a couple of freight handlers that supply the islands and inlet on Johnstone Straight and up to
Pr Rupert...I'll be awaiting your info...

Rik-
I am in B.C. now, and have tried checking out what you were looking for i.e. some sort of barge that could deliver your van to a remote beach. The general consensus here is that probably the easiest way is to put the vehicle on the ferry and get it to the general area (Prince Rupert or where-ever) and then find a local short-haul barge or landing craft to take it to your desired local destination. The big barges that ply the main route (Johnstone Strait-Queen Charlotts) are apparently too big; and being towed by tugs, not set up to maneuver into or onto the shore. I hope this helps. I'll be here for another couple of days if there is some other local knowledge (or lack thereof) that you need.
