Well its that time a year again, or at least getting there. So im starting to plan out this years Toy Drive. It's our 5th year for organizing this and I can't believe how fast time flies. This year will be the best so far. We've teamed up with the US Marines to have the event on Camp Pendleton Marine Base this year!

So, where exactly will the event be held on the Base? Well you'll love this. There's a little known Campground that us civilians don't know about (nope not the beach one sorry) called Lake O'Neill!

We have the FIELD 1 location reserved for us. There's toilets, water, fishing, mtn biking, hiking, paddle boats, playground, and even miniature golf.

You can download a map of the location here. http://www.mccscp.com/sites/default/files/pdf/recreation/lake-oneill/campground-map.pdf

Saturday night 6PM is the Cocktail Hour/Mingle party presented by Sportsmobile. Look for the fleet of SMB's and head that way if you'd like to join in.

Sunday, those who've camped.. will take our time packing up camp and head out by noon.

Detailed Driving Instructions:

Exit I-5 at Harbor Drive, proceed north onto Vandergrift Blvd to the Main Gate at Camp Pendleton. Have your ID, registration and proof of insurance handy.

*Note: At the gate, tell the guard that you are going to Lake O'Niell for a Toys for Tots event and that you need a day pass. They will direct you to a large building adjacent to the main gate where you will show your drivers license, registration and proof of insurance in return for a visitor pass that allows your vehicle on base legally. That's it!

Proceed north on Vandergrift Blvd for several miles until you come to the air station (you'll see a large air strip on the left with helos etc and a long row of warehouses on the right).

Keep going on Vandergrift (do not turn left on Basilone or you are headed to San Clemente).

Continue to proceed on Vandergrift (keep left, do not turn on Rattlesnake Canyon).

Just past Rattlesnake Canyon you will see signs for the Naval Hospital, turn LEFT at the light onto Santa Margarita Road to the lake.

Take your first right onto Lakeside Drive AFTER the lake and look for ExPo rigs - you have arrived.

REMEMBER: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is a Federal Installation. Speed limits and other laws are enforced more strictly than out in town so conduct yourself accordingly.

*Additional note: Double check to make sure none of you stuff is expired (especially your proof of insurance). You cannot get a base pass if any of the above items are missing or expired.

Second on the speed limits. No kidding, the Marine Corps Military Police are trained to stop you for driving 1 mph over the posted limit. The good news is the tickets only cost you points against your base driving privileges.

Hope that helps.
Eric

Not to put a damper on this great event, but on the base where I work, a ticket means going to Federal Court for the hearing. Not a quick, pay-by-mail affair. I've only been pulled over once in 25+ years of Govt service, so I don't find that they are looking for any and every reason to pull you over.

BTW, if shouldn't need to be said, but weapons are a BIG no-no.

Herb

Great info Herb! Will we be seeing you attend? Hope so!

Wow, i can't believe the vendor support thus far. Just announced that Expedition Ops will be donating a little something for our raffle and Aluminess will be attending to show off their bumpers and tire swing outs!

What great people we have in the Off Road World!

Hey Dave,

For those camping, is a reservation needed or just show up (or did I miss where you said that somewhere?)?

Seems like a great cause and great excuse to get out and see some cool gear and meet some good people.

Not positive I'll make it, but hope to.

:b8: Sorry, didn't mean to imply that those pesky Marines are out to get you. Just that on a Marine Base, the speed limit is considered the speed limit. No buffer. Especially if you are near base housing.

Easy to deal with so long as you understand the game. :b6:

Out in town, most of us are accustomed to a 5-10 mph buffer before anyone would consider themselves "really" speeding. :b1:

Oh, and in 17+ years of Gov't service I've never been pulled over on base because I am a much better driver than Herb... :a5:
:c3:

Eric,

I think it's smart that you brought up the issue. There are many times on military bases, especially with the wide open spaces, that it's hard not to speed a little. And yes, you must be a better driver than me. Either that, or you're due to be pulled over. :b1:

Dave,

You keep moving this event further South, making it more challenging to attend.

Herb

It is one of the most beautiful days in San Diego, so off to the Toys for Tots camp out at Camp Pendleton.

Looking forward to supporting the Marines and seeing you all there.

Happy Hour at 6 PM, have a Keg of Land Shark and some appetizers so bring the toys and we will all have a great time.

SMB

Going to roll the dice on coming up. Don't have the new van in my name yet but do have it insured title in hand and current license. Could play it safe and bring the old one but what fun would that be?

Hope see everyone there....

Drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance it what's needed on the base I work on.

Herb

Had a great time even though I could only stay a few hours.

Amazed at how many toys were collected!

I think there were 15 + vans there.

Tried uploading the rest into this post and there was an error. The rest are in my gallery. I'll try again later.

Great time. And yes thanks to Alan and Liz. Darn Chris burned the cookies again. Dick D.

Was a great time and all for a great cause.........some hardcore SMBrs liked the burnt cookies.

There were four dozen good ones. :a2:

Thanks to all.
