Turbo After Market Hoses

Having the turbo serviced at SJC ford, is there an aftermarket set of hoses for the Eseries? Is it a worthwhile investment?

Upgrading the fuel pump, ERG replace, test the injectors....with temp diff in the low single digits what else I can ck while in there?

Mileage at 50k on an 06 with the 6.0 that gives us to much to talk about

Indeed, lots of things to be aware of. Let's see...

-turbo-serviced? If it needs a rebuild use a 360 degree thrust washer, stainless steel unison ring, and consider a billet compressor wheel. Turbo Parts - 6.0L Powerstroke - Products

-replace the turbo drain and feed lines with the OEM upgraded parts
-6C3Z-9T515-A and 3C3Z-9T516-A

-chances are the underhood heat will have made the turbo solenoid harness brittle and it will break when removed. It would be handy to have one of these on hand. So to speak.Ford VGT Turbo Control Solenoid Pigtail Harness

-replace the ICP and EBP. Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor (EBP) part# 5C3Z-9J460-B. ICP (Injection Control Pressure) Sensor ICP 04-07 4C3Z9F838A

-with the turbo off, it's not that much more labor to have the upgraded STC kit to replace the snap to connect fitting on the High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). This one is very important. Replace the IPR screen. IPR is the injection pressure regulator. It is used to control fuel delivery and is screwed into the back of the HPOP. If the screen is loaded up with debris or torn then dollars to donuts the HPOP inlet screen on top of the oil cooler is torn as well. No win scenario and critical preventative maintenance.

-Updated STC kit w/ turbo gasket kit (incl. IPR screen and orings) -4C3Z-9B246-F

And to answer your question, there are no swanky aftermarket boots and intercooler pipes, etc for the E series. Your best bet is to go OEM. This place has really good prices. AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake | Parts & Accessories

In summary, the updated STC fitting, HPOP screen, turbo feed and return lines are all parts that were re-designed and updated by Ford. They are things that should be installed or replaced while the turbo is out as most of them can easily be accessed during this process. Hope that helps.

Your 2006 may already have some of the upgraded parts. You might think that since your taking it to the Ford dealership they might notice or suggest anything PM related but not wise to assume so. Good to know going in. And a lot of mechanics abide by the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" motto. Not words to live by on the 6.0. If your in there, do it.

Rich Rader (service manager) is a personal friend of mine. He also owns a 6.0 and has a 4Wheel camper (one of us basically).I know it's hard to believe but this is not a stealership. They have some great diesel mechanics. My opinion, let them do the diagnoses and recommendations.

Yep Rich sure sounds like a nice fellow. giving me a nice discount on the labor rate and as suggested said its all wise PM, he said some of the parts would otherwise have 100% failure rate so better now than in the road.

It's the first time we go in there and with temps in the low singles I'm hopping this is it for another 50k.

But then it's a 6.0 one can only hope....all that said I sure love the torque.

Yeah, despite the pitfalls I love the 6.0. Tons of torque and power. Sounds like you're in good hands.

But because I can't help myself and the forum seems slow lately here's some more food for thought and things to ask Mr. Rich. And what's his labor rate anyway? How much markup on parts?

Next on the PM list are injectors, FICM, and batteries. A contribution test is the best way to diagnose the injectors. Even if they all check within specs consider sending the FICM off to FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts

Or, pick up the bulletproof unit. Ford used low quality capacitors and other parts in the FICM to save money. The underhood heat in the cramped engine bay of the vans kills FICMs. Sometimes they fail gradually or it just may die leaving you stranded. More PM would be to have it rebuilt with better components and soldering with a life time warranty.

The stock alternator is not up to the task on the 6.0. Have that checked as well. FICM health starts with the batteries and alternator. Make sure you replace your batteries in pairs.

Perhaps the most impt thing in the whole shebang is to install a coolant filter.
 
Yep injectors tested ok, I'm told that the FICM is a DIY aftermarket and volt still look good. New Batts already in, coolant filter in a few year ago (I'm the drain & replace every 12mo strategy that is working thus far) Haven't look at the alternator but I monitor that and the turbo Tms with the scanner. Did I said that I have a heavy foot too... Not sure it is cool to post the $, I don't mind to share if you PM.

Yep, I think the nature of these vehicles and their use demands that we pay a premium in terms of PM and mechanic skill sets to avoid breakdowns in not very accessible places. Perhaps more so when you have a vehicle with the reputation of the 6.0; I love the engine but I am heavy handed in the PM side of things, And do greatly appreciate all the help his forum provides. My SMB will be done next Monday...and I can't wait to rev it up to 4K and feel the roar...

By they way my next project is upgrading the front seats and are debating between Sienna's or trying seat covers.... Will Wet Okole do installations, any good upholllery shop around SoCal?
 
I been driving the vehicle now for a week and what a difference, most notably is the much lower exaust temperatures, parhaps due to better oil circulation. I put the foot to the metal, all the way to the metal, on a steep hill and it top off at ~ 1050 F. It has much better response and it feels much stronger at the lower RPMs.

Rich did told me that the turbo was pretty dirty and the Bearing was gone, I was a bit surprised about that's as I'm always adding additive to the DSL, perhaps I wasn't driving it hard enough....
