What else should I do? - 6.0 Engine Rebuild List

Has anyone considered a Fuel Return on your setup? Is this worth it given that mods w/the Turbo and Injectors?

https://dynamicdiesel60.com/product/xdp-6-0l-regulated-return-fuel-system/

Here's what I've decided to do...

- Long Block Stage 2(either Dynamic Diesel or DFC(Tow/haul option)
- Titan Turbo
- Warren Fuel Injectors 155

We did a fuel return and wish it was done long ago.
It's easy and provides a more consistent fuel delivery than stock.
Plus it allows the fuel to circulate rather than dead end...not much, but each little thing helps.

Regarding cooling options for a diesel van:
* relocate the fluid coolers from in front of the radiator
* install zeta's under bumper deflector - https://www.sportsmobileforum.com/forums/f33/too-cool-for-school-7707.html
* tuning - adjusting the electric fan setpoints + criteria
* body lift
* hood / fender vents
* potentially downsizing the A/C condensor = less interference to intercooler + radiator
* upsizing the intercooler
* Odawg intake manifold
* aftermarket exhaust manifolds (e.g. BD Diesel, etc.)
* upgrade turbo
* upgrade radiator
* ceramic coat exhaust pipes + turbo + exhaust manifolds - https://www.cerakote.com/shop/cerakote-coating/C-186/piston-coat-air-cure
* electric fans on fluid coolers

Well fortunately I got rid of both before that happened. The first blew up. Cost $25 grand
to fix. The second one Jeff had to put a new turbo in at 78k. Like I said V10. Less MPG
but a whole lot of peace of mind. And NO baby sittin and F--KIN with it.

Update(9-1-20)

So I've finally made a decision to go with Zylstra Automotive out of Visalia(a 3 hour drive from me) to do the work on my van. Keep in mind I spoke to 5 different shops and 4 different engine builders and due to my timing and budget I ended up going with AsheEngines in which Jay highly recommends. Here's the list and parts have been placed and are in route to Zylstra. The Van will be there on TH or Friday and the engine will arrive next week. Here we go... :)

1. AsheEngines(Engine Block:
Studded Long Block
Stage 2 Camshaft
O-RINGED CYLINDER HEADS)"
2. Conversion Set Ford (MICIS54450)
3. Ford OEM Oil Cooler
4. sinister diesel EGR cooler
5. Stand Pipe Kit(6E7Z9A332 :cool:
6. Seal Kit(3C3Z9433 BJ)
7. Oil Seal(3C3Z 6700 BA)
8. Rear main Seal(3C3Z 6701 :cool:
9. Thermostat/Engine coolant (RT-1169)
10. Glowplug/Diesel Glow Plug (ZD-12-A2)
11. Anti Freese 50/50 Long Life (AP63661)
12. Turbo stand seal kit (3C3Z 9T517 AG)
13. Thermostat (3C3Z 8575 AA)
14. 15w40 Motor Oil
15. Fuel Filter/Fuel Filter
16. Oil Filter
17. Transmission Fluid -
18. Engine Wiring Harness (4C3Z-12B637-CA)
19. Redgear Steering
20. BD transmission Double stack transmission cooler
21. Sinister Wiring upgrade kit
22. New Ford Lower OIL PAN
23. 5R110W Powerstroke Transmission Saver Plug
24. 8 x NEW Fuel injectors (Brand New stock injectors)
25. New HPOP, IPR Valve, STC Upgrade
26. KC 1.5 turbo
27. Heavy duty Alternator - Leece neville 230 Amp

That really is a nice list!
If you have the budget, I'd suggest a low temp thermostat & replacing the fan clutch at the same time, along with a BPD FICM.
EDIT: I'd also upgrade to a BPD water pump

Worth mentioning; I recall at some point in the last year or so, one member (believe it may have been Arctictraveller) had their engine wiring harness wrapped with a heat shield prior to install.

Yep... First and last diesel for me 2003 7.3...I bought two of them both for $3,000 each one with 190,000 the other with 210 k.
Both were maintained fleet vehicles.
The obscene cost of working on these and the preventive maintenance OMG...it's like pick your poison Dove what will destroy your engine and cost you five times what you paid for the van...lol😄
my next one I'm just going to do an F-150 F-350 5.4 something along those lines..... Engines are 1/3 price and no worries except for the usual Ford stuff like exploding spark plugs and cylinder heads...lol

No Hurt feelings here... I'm just super stoked that my wife is supporting this and the way I see it is that I LOVE THIS VAN and I'm keeping it forever!!! I'm just trying to slowly convince her to sell our house and live in our new van. ;) Once the engine and the mechanical stuff is done I will be redoing the interior which will be another thread. :p1:

Btw, I already did the BPF FICM Power supply, and the BPF water pump! I'm having Jay test the Fan clutch and if it needs to go then I'll swap it out with a new one.

If the existing harness is brittle, invest the ~$700 in a new harness!
It costs more than that to replace it after-the-fact...ask us how we know!!!:b1:
I didn't get a photo, but i wrapped our new harness in ThermoTec express wrap + their tape (not that great) and metal duct tape (homedepot)
Several hours of work, but a worthwhile investment.:d5:

The new build is getting a new wiring harness for sure. I'm definitely going to look into the heat wrap. Thanks for the suggestion.

You have a link to the new harness ? Is it OEM?

"You have a link to the new harness ? Is it OEM?"

Yes, more info, please.

No offense guys but there's no need to muck up ucsundog's build thread with anti-diesel rhetoric.

As a non-diesel owner I didn't see the mentioned input as necessarily anti-diesel so much as simply pointing out the downsides of such ownership.

ucsundog seems to take the input well enough and has already made the informed choice to proceed with his project. Sometimes the benefits greatly offset expenditures despite how others might choose to do themselves in a similar.

Regardless I hope this project wraps up 110% to your expectations---it sounds like you're on the right path for the needs anticipated. :d5:

Here's one site for a 2006 E350 with 6.0 = https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/part...d_transmission.html?filter=(30163;36591;26465)

There are many other ford dealers with higher and lower prices.
Make sure to input the vin to ensure the correct part!!

Ford Dealer price - $1500 but Jay(Zylstra) found one for 700! This guy Jay made me it so much easier for me and I will tell you that he was the most responsive and helpful guy compared to all the other shops which in the end made it so much easier for me to decide to go with them.

Maybe it's buried back in the thread somewhere but I'm curious about the stage 2 cam. Does Asheville do their own grinding on the cam lobes? And are the cylinder heads a new cast? And I presume you are reusing your intake manifold. I'm wondering if one of the aftermarket manifolds like the Odawg might help maximize the performance gains from the cam upgrade. And just a comment on injectors. They are all reman's. You can't get new OEM injectors and the jury is out on whether the aftermarket options like Warrens are more reliable.

That was what prompted my question a few pages back about injectors. I'm out of the loop on who's injectors are "the ones" to use for reliability. I was under the impression that no new injectors have been manufactured in many many years, and more importantly no brand new spool valves (the part that sticks). When reading what a provider of "new" injectors actually do they seem to either have no info on what they actually do to remanufacture or there is a lot of inspect to confirm meets standards. I've heard roomers on forums over the years, emphasizing they are roomers on the internet, that there is a wide margin of quality of reman injectors for sale. Some injectors having a 50% failure rate in a few thousand miles, resulting in mechanic shops doing a lot of warranty replacements. My motivation for the question is the inevitability someday of my motor coming out and when it dose I'll update the injectors. I have no idea who's injectors to specify.

Asheville used to do their own grinding but the Stage 2 camshaft is a brand new billet one. The Heads are remanufactured in house and are NOT new like the KDD heads. I would have preferred them but at a 12 week lead time, and given the my application for my van is for longevity and reliability and not PUSHING high HP(500 or more), I didn't see the need to spend the extra 1500. I wanted to put that money to new KC Turbo and Injectors.

Here's the link to the "brand new" injectors from Accuratediesel.

https://www.accuratediesel.com/6-0l-powerstroke-injector-brand-new-not-remanufactured.html

Here's what they state,

"NOT Remanufactured!

For many years our customers have asked us for a BRAND NEW 6.0L Powerstroke Injector Option. Finally, it is here! Our new fuel injectors come direct from Ford's original equipment supplier. There is simply no better 6.0L injector anywhere on the planet. For those who appreciate the very best quality, this is it. No part of the injector ever used in any engine anywhere at any time!

Please note that the manufacturer does require a core exchange on these, even though they are brand new 6.0 Powerstroke injectors."

I wanted to do the Owdawg but I can't get that product shipped to CA, unless you can find another way around the system ;)
