Wilsons Farewell Tour July 2014 Help Needed

Folks.

Due to the New Baby and Mrs. Wilsons need...

Wilson will be taking his last trip with us this July before sale

....sheesh, my eyes are watering


Need Suggestions for Trip:

Parameters:
Wife 6 months pregant, and cant travel far
Short 4-6 hour drive from Irvine, CA

Prefer Bushwacking or Ocean/Lake/Water
we have 4x4 and are fully self contained

I tried the campgrounds up and down the coast, No Joy
We can go mid week
3-5 days max
Any suggestions welcome
If you have a secret spot I would respect that and take info by PM

Check out the Kennedy Meadows area in the southern Sierra, Monache Meadows and what not. Haven't been there myself, but looks very interesting, and probably less crowded than the Isabella area. Also, there is some dispersed camping up in the mountains above Big Sur in Los Padres Nat'l Forest; look off Nacimiento Rd. The USFS campgrounds down below are often full but both Plaskett and Kirk Creek have some sites that are NOT reserved.

Or boondock it around Mammoth; it's high enough to be cool. Hard to boony right at water (Coyote Flats?), but you could camp and day trip around to lakes and what not.

No nothing about your area..........but: "short 4-6 hours"...stop for a short walk every 2 hours or so. Remember as the baby gets bigger the baby's mother's bladder gets smaller. Have a great time but don't push it.

The area around Troy meadows is a bit nicer than Kennedy but the whole route from 395 is one **** of a medium grade. If you do plan to make that climb, there are several roads to explore. Troy Meadows is a campground on one side of 190 but the other side has a couple of dispersed sites that are nice provided nobody is around.



Up the road on Sherman pass there are more off road routes although I've never drove to the ends of the trails marked as dead ends.

You know it isn't too :b1: much longer to drive to the Virginia Lakes area. Green Lakes is sure nice and I would think it would be much cooler. At least it isn't that far off 395.

We did a trip to Sherman Pass last year around the last week of July going from the Kernville side. The drive up out of the Kern River area has some nice views. The main highway across the pass is paved while the other roads in the area are dirt. There are a number of campgrounds in the area but we boondocked the two nights that we were in the area. We actually paid our campground fee for the second night but then left since it was obvious that most of the campers had trail motorcycles...we didn't think that we'd have a quiet evening in the campground.

For the first night, we turned off onto a dirt road to a trailhead to Dome Land Wilderness (possibly Road 22S40) and found a large flat area to camp at the trailhead. After giving up our campsite the second night, we took another dirt road and pulled off in a flat area when we figured that we were far enough from the main road to be by ourselves.

Upon dropping down the eastside to Highway 395, we headed north toward Lone Pine and spent a couple of nights camping at Whitney Portal Campground...very nice and very quiet since most of the campers are acclimating before a climb of Mt. Whitney. They go to bed very early!

We will be hitting the 395 route

First night probably Diaz lake so the ride is not too long

(wife pregnant and has always struggled w/ motion sickness

Then up to Mammoth

I scored 4 nights at Twin Lakes campground on a little finger of the park
with two spaces right on the lake

We may or may not stay there, but have a Safety net for the Wife

Hey BW
If you do stay at twin lakes, make sure to make a side trip to Bodie State Historic Park. Well worth the 30 mile drive.

There are easy boondocking opportunities in the area as well.

Diaz lake in Summer is too hot for a pregnant woman. I really suggest you head east and go to Ancient Brisle cone pine forest. You are buying a bigger rig and will not/ should not go there with a big rig. Remote,cool but dry and campground is suggested donation. There is a lookout point where you can see the Sierras from where they start in the South clear to Tahoe.We were in our 33 foot class A and could not get to the visitors center. We were just too long. Great stars at night. Take lots of water. None in camp. Take pics for me. I also second Virginia lakes over TwinLakes.Look on youtube for vids.

Twin lakes

Last night in 'bama hills

Slight tire challenge yesterday

Our site is pretty much on the lake
We got lucky
Mrs. Wilson and baby did great
The Large White Rat slept on Dads lap most of the trip

Mrs. Wilson's lap has shrunk LOL
