OBTW, airing down your tires is another tried and true help. In the snow that is. Once you get to ice you are going to need something abrasive like chains, kitty litter, carpet, etc.
All good advice so far. It has been over 25 years since I have driven in snow, and at my age that is too long ago to remember what I once knew about snow driving.

I do a lot of snowboarding and mountain and off road driving in snow. Chain up before you need to even in town. If snow base is soft and not deep 4 wheel drive and aggressive tire pattern is fine. For ice good chains are a must have. I've driven all types of 4x4s and our long wheel base heavy rigs are not optimal for off highway deep snow. We sink and plough through stuff, but if you invest in good duty chains this works well most of the time. Lighter 4x4 rigs with short wheel base will often outshine us. The real answer is to NOT GET STUCK in the first place. Chains and 4x4 will out match a 2x4 any day in snow. The more driving time in snow the better you will be when determining chains or no chains! If in doubt throw a pair of chains on either front or back. I prefer the front.

What chains would you recommend? I currently have a set of these that i kept in my last truck but never had to use:
These seem too light duty for the SMB but since the tire size of the SMB is exactly the same as my old truck I'll keep them as a 2nd set. Right now I'm thinking of going with these unless there is something better suited to our vans out there:
