Re: Theres gotta be a trick. . .

After mine came out of the Ford dealership my vans shifters were similar. It has never been the same but did loosen up over time. I do use mine a lot and it seems to be getting better. I think it's a linkage issue. Have you looked under there and seen anything out of the ordinary? For a while I couldn't even get in & out of high 4x4 on the fly.

Re: Theres gotta be a trick. . .

I emailed Advance Adapters regarding "break-in" of the Atlas transfer case. This was the reply I received back from customer service:

"Some customers say they break in over time. I personally believe they not only break in a little over time, but I also feel the customer learns to shift the unit by practice. I don't think Hubs have much factor."

So he kinda says the transfer cases might sorta break in, but I must be doing it wrong. . .

Re: Theres gotta be a trick. . .

Just got back from a weekend in Moab, went with some friends that have a somewhat new to them '06 w/ the atlas, we played around with things for a bit and explored top of the world trail. We found that by putting the rear into neutral we were able to shift the front into 4 low followed by shifting the rear into 4 low.

Re: Theres gotta be a trick. . .

Finally! I thought it was just me....When I bought The Van new in 2005, I could shift into 4X4 on "the fly", as advertised. But after about 5 years and 40k miles, I could only shift into 4X4 while at a complete stop. Now, I have to plan ahead, and be at a dead stop to shift into 4X4, not a big deal, but would like to know why my Atlas TC decided to change the program. All my other four wheel drive vehicles have had the old fashioned 4X4 that required stopping to shift, but don't know why the Atlas has changed.

Re: Theres gotta be a trick. . .

I've found it's kind of like shifting a manual transmission without using a clutch. It just involves more like, RPM's, terrain, steering position, and speed becoming some of the factors.

Using the Atlas

Yep, had to go into 4WD yesterday. Lots of playing. Got it to work.

Advanced Adaptors also makes a cable shifter kit for the Atlas transfer case. I had it on my Jeep and it worked well. Buy the gears are straight cut so...it takes some finess to get it shifted into 4x. Inching forward or backward with the front hubs locked is the technique I used most often.
