Why are 75% of all 4x4 SMB for sale - 2006, 6.0L?

I've been lurking for months, and searching, and it seems that most used 4x4 are 2006 year model. Is there a reason for this? i know the 6.0 has its "issues"... is it really worth it to go back a few to the 7.3? or forward to 2010+? I know its been beat to death, but just how bad can the 6.0 get? Is 8 years old the perfect time to sell a smb? whats the scoop?

There is no doubt the Ford 7.3 is a better motor. But I think more people sell because in 05-07 the hottest selling SMB was with the 6.0 PSD. It was right at before the Sprinter was coming along and the production lines at SMB were probably 80% diesels going out the door. Mine was one of them. Now I see a lot of Sprinters on the line in Fresno.

I think the question would be how many SMB owners sell their 6.0 powered vans and get a new gas powered Sportsmobile? If that was the case I think you could point at the motor. Seems like those who sell go to something else for other reasons. I could be wrong. The 6.0 is a high maintenance engine cost wise.

No evidence to the fact, but I'm guessing the combination of Ford, 6.0L, and 4x4 were the largest number of builds by SMB in those years.

yes...... they must have sold a WHOLE bunch of the ford 2006's ... thats all i see when i do a 4x4 used smb search.....cuz i dont see too many 05 or 07 or much of anything else for that matter. The question i guess, is, same as the first, would a 3 year older 7.3 with more miles (or equivalent) be that much better in the long run (and am i to believe claims that MPG approaches 19-20 on a fully loaded smb 7.3?). the 6.0 seem to go 200-250k miles max, but the 7.3 boasts 4-500k or more. or would forkin out more for a newer model make more sense. its all just opinion i suppose, but opinions are like _____... we all need em!!! hahaa... not to mention if you don't jump on a deal, ITS GONE BABY GONE!!! did you see that souped up 7.3 black and white "urban" huge rims low miles for 12k out of sandiego - and using that for a build - but TOO LATE.... perhaps just fork out 100k for the 4x4 sprinter smb.

I'd say the longevity of any motor is FAR more dependent on proper maintenance, rather than what motor is. The 7.3's have been around long enough to make some generalizations on their potential longevity, I personally don't think the 6.0's have been around long enough to make such a broad statement that they'll only go 200-250K miles.

It would also be interesting to know how many units SMB put out each year between say, 2000 and 2010. If I recall, the economy was pretty decent in 2006 and 2007 so there were likely quite a few 'no expenses spared' type builds during that period.

I agree that times were good in 2005 when I ordered my van. Diesel was cheap and the buck was worth more. I remember after getting my van and the price of diesel shot through the roof making me feel like I'd made a mistake. Like I posted earlier, it was a boomer year for SMB selling 4x4 diesel vans in 2006. Aluminess probably also scored big because it seemed like most of the vans had those bumpers.
I noticed that as the years go on, many owners of (both gas and diesel) SMB's slow down a bit on their adventures. I used mine quite a bit more during the first 5 or 6 years of ownership and have slowed down over the last 3 years. I mainly took short trips and I have slightly over 90K miles on my motor. Any SMB is a huge investment and being the majority of 4x4 vans coming out of SMB were 6.0 PSD's diesels (and not V-10's), adding the fact that it's hard to justify that big of an investment (100K+) sitting around sucking up funds and not being used makes sense that you're seeing more 6.0 SMB's for sale. Just my slant at it.

There also may have been a dip in 2004 and maybe 2005 SMB 6.0 productions because a slew of 7.3 were ordered right there at the end of 2003. I of course was not in that group.
