Re: Looking for campground recomendations along 395

Campsites at Convict Lake can be reserved. We camp there every fall but avoid weekends when the campground tends to get noisy.

One thing to keep in mind...check the campsite cancellation policy for Yosemite. People may reserve a campsite months in advance and then need to cancel a week before they are to arrive. Some try to sell their site on Craigslist but others might just cancel and get a refund and you might be able to change your plans at the last minute and be able to camp in the Valley...

Re: Looking for campground recomendations along 395

Here's my shortlist of campgrounds along 395 based on some indecipherable, unrepeatable criteria. Any firsthand experience, positive or negative, with the following campgrounds?

French Camp (near Lake Crowley)
New Shady Rest (Mammoth Mountain area)
Old Shady Rest (Mammoth Mountain area)
Twin Lakes (near Mammoth Mountain)

Herb

P.S. Jack, I will check occasionally for Yosemite cancellations. Thanks for the recommendation.

You probably already know this, but any campground in Shady rest or Twin Lakes is going to be very crowded during the summer.

The density of campsites is high and the yahoo factor is often as high or higher. Not secluded nor remote.

Of the two, I would much prefer Twin Lakes. The location, scenery and fishing are great in the lakes basin.

Never been to French camp, but anything near Crowley is unlikely to have much or any tree cover if that matters to you.

For USFS camping within 20 miles of Mammoth, my favorite campsites are in the Rock Creek area. Iris meadow and Big meadow are creekside, small and very scenic.

Good luck.

Thanks Rob. Located the Rock Creek campgrounds on the map below. I'm really starting to love the website for getting info on campgrounds along the 395 corridor from Big Pine to Topaz Lake.

You could always reserve a group site and make it a "meet up" for the group. "Church Group" is code among several friends to take advantage of group site availability at campgrounds. We've never been pressed for any information about our "church."
