It's not about rock crawling, it's about going slow and slower in low range. You have more control going up, down, over or through anything the slower you are going. With how heavy these are that makes a big difference.
You might not think that you need to go lower than the Atlas, but going on a simple trail in low with 4.11s and 33s I've "bounced" the van over to about 30º just going in a large set of ruts that started unevenly. I was pretty sure the van would be renamed tippy after we pulled it off the tree, but luckily it didn't go over.
Even so the auto effectively doubles (or so I've heard) your crawl ratio (in terms of "rock crawling") because of the torque convertor, and you may well experience better gas mileage as a result of higher gears. My Jeep currently has 3.73s and 35s and I'm getting as good of gas mileage as stock... well that is when springing for premium.
