Seriously bummed that I won't be able to make it due to a scheduling conflict that I can't get out of.

Rally Hiking Options:

Three Ridges Hike - One of the best views along this stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Lots of variations possible. Trailhead is on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is about 6 miles from the camping site.

Three Ridges Hike

Humpback Rocks - An all time classic. Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This one is 13 miles from the camping site but is worth visiting on the way in/out. There's also a small visitor center and a replica, 1890s, mountain farm. The farm is worth a walk through. The Park Service holds activities there and opens the farm buildings but am not sure if they'll be up and running. I'll update everyone as we get closer. Don't know how people did it back in the day.

Humpback Rocks Hike

Albright Loop Trail (aka Dobie Mtn)- Aircraft wreckage. Shares a trailhead with Humpback Rocks. Worth a stop at Glass Hollow Overlook and a trip down to the Paul Wolfe Shelter (on the Appalachian Trail).

Dobie Mountain Hike

Rockfish River - A stone's throw from the camping site. Flat walk through active pastureland. Borders the Rockfish River. Good fishing here too. Kids will like this one.

Rockfish Valley Trails The Rockfish Valley Foundation: As Big As All Outdoors |

Wintergreen - Nearby "ski" resort. Nature Foundation maintains a well marked trail system throughout the property. Can connect to the Appalachian Trail.

Hiking and Walking Trails — The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen

Crabtree Falls - Claim to be the tallest falls East of the Mississippi. 2.5 mile hike. Trailhead is about 30 minutes from the camp site. Fun activity with kids.

Hi TLG,
put me down for Saturday lunch, but were going to stay at sherando lake rec. and do some hiking and check out the area. I like a picnic table and the other amenities. There are lots of sites open right now on loop A I'm going to book tonight.

TLG, is there a possibility to stay longer than to Sun? Possible to stay either a night or two more?

Original agreement was Fri to Sun. Let me ask if an extension is available. I'll let everyone know as soon as I hear back.

Other options nearby include full service sites at Sherando, primitive campsites along the Big Levels Jeep Trail (sites off the Blue Ridge Parkway are fairly easy to get to), and primitive sites along Coal Rd. Big Levels and Coal Rd are in the George Washington National Forest.

Misty Mountain Camp RV Resort is about 25 minutes away and close to I-64. Its a nice campground and not far from Charlottesville.

Another update in a series of area activities. This one is focused on fishing. Lots of great fly fishing spots and stocked mountain streams within a quick drive from the camping area (Tye, Rockfish, and Sherando area). Others a bit further out (Shenandoah National Park and Sugar Hollow) but can be hit on the way to/from the meet up. See post 22 hiking options and post 20 for biking options.

Unfortunately, we're not able to stay past Sun. Separately, wanted to get a picture out of the camping area. Nice and flat with shade and mountain views. A quick walk to the Devils Backbone basecamp area.

Still planning on it... hope others are as well. I will likely drive part-way Thursday afternoon / evening, camp somewhere, and do a leisurely last few hours up the Parkway looking for photo ops on that Friday.

Is there a "check-in" time we should not arrive before?
