Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps
I spoke with Steve at Rock Slide today--he's going to see how four upfront will work. He showed me the JK he used in the Youtube video posted above--the step/sliders are neater than I thought. Beautifully made and extremely strong. He said he'll have numbers for me on Monday.
He told me SMB West was interested, but wanted the price comparable to the AMP steps. Having seen both, there is no comparison between the two. The Rock Sliders are heavy duty steel rocker protection where the AMP steps are cool and useful, they are not, however, strong and offer no rocker protection. In fact they are a vulnerable point themselves.
We're going to try and have a set on my rig for the Valley of Fire gathering BTW.

Rock Slide is only 30 miles from me in the town where I--ahem--grew up. my mother still lives there. I'm leaving for an SMB/Photo trip at the end of September so it'll be close.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps
BTW where are the drive motors located for these sliders? I just wonder about what might be vulernable underneath the rig.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps
I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures of the JK Steve showed me today.
His work is superb. The bumpers he makes for the Jeeps are beautifully done and very innovative. How many have tried to close the rear doors on an SMB by grabbing either the spare tire or cargo box instead of the door itself? I have the marks in my rear doors to prove I still do that. He rigged up a way to tie his swing away tire carrier to the rear door of the JK, making them close together. A simple thing, but why didn't Aluminess or SMB do it?
Here's another video of the sliders and Steve himself at SEMA 2010:

I'll take some close ups of the JK when I'm down next week and post them. The SMB units are mounted differently, but he says they are easier to install.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps
Someone could buy two and sell the second when the inevitable "I never saw this thread, I want a pair, is this still available" comes along a week later...

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps
Tom,
Please keep me updated. I've got my van parked in SoCal right now and am planning on shipping it to Hawaii some time mid to late next month. It would be great if I could get them shipped to SoCal and installed before I ship the van to Hawaii. Would save me a couple of hundred $$ in shipping cost not having to ship them separate from my van back to Hawaii.

Everything, linkage, actuators etc.are inside the slider so they are protected from obstacles, salt and dirt. Ingenious design.
