Radio setup to fuse panel under gaucho

So I installed my Yaseu Ham radio yesterday and decided to place it under the gaucho since this unit allows remote mounting of the faceplate and microphone. I planned to tap into the 12V fuse panel under the gaucho to get the DC power.

Now today I read on a forum that you should go directly to the battery to avoid a fire.

Does anyone see a problem with this? There was a empty spot on the fuse panel for a furnace (which I do not have) and a 15 Amp fuse. The radio says 9 amps continuous. The radio is 2 feet away from the fuse panel and I used the supplied wires (I think they were 10 or 12 gauge).

I think that's fine. If the fuse is for 15 amps you can probably trust that SMB ran a large enough wire from the fuse block to the battery bank. It is easy to check their work if you want to be detailed, just find the size of the wire and estimate how long the run is to the battery. The size should be written on the wire somewhere, but if not, use calipers to estimate it and look then look it up. There are tables online for what the appropriate size is, given the length and load.

There should be no problem with hooking your radio in through that fuse.

I can't see why that should ever be a fire hazard. However, hooking it straight to the battery could be a hazard.

CB and HAM radios are always best wired to the battery. It's not a fire issue, its a interference issue. They're the exception to the rule of wiring into a fuse block.

What antenna did you use and where did you mount it?

Do you have any pics of the install?

Joey,
The antenna is the DIAMOND CR8900 4-Band Mobile. It is made specifically for the quad band Yaesu FT-8900R.

I do have a few photos which I can post, if you like, when I am back in town week after next.
The nice part of this radio is that you can remote mount it. The main unit is under my gaucho and then a phone cord connects it to the "faceplate" and mic which I installed up top next to my CB.
