^^^ what I do. I rarely leave the long section pinned to the top in my EB-50. But I almost never use the bottom bed. All my bedding stays on top of the long section. It's also less weight for the lift.
If required the long section can be hooked to the roof and the short section can be flipped up against the rear wall out of the way but as most say, it makes a nice shelf if needed in a non walk through.

I recommend a 2 piece. Mine was 3, which few are, and I changed it. One piece seems like it would be a bit cumbersome.

Re: PH bed - talk to me about 1-piece vs. sections, please

I have the 50 floor plan and two-piece bed. I always leave the rear down for storing things, but also my son loves hanging out up there while I'm downstairs. Especially if it's not good weather outside and we have to stay inside. He loves it.

Re: PH bed - talk to me about 1-piece vs. sections, please

I have a walk through setup with two piece sections.

I find the padding of the PH bed to be a little to stiff, so we keep bedding, pillows, and additional padding up there when we're camped and not sleeping. I don't think we'd fit all that stuff in the rather small space between ceiling and padding if I had a single section attached to the ceiling.

It would be really nice to be able to walk through the entire length, but at least we can stand in the couch/kitchen area.

Also, I switch place of the short and long piece when going to bed so that the hole in the smaller sectional is around the knee area instead of shoulder area.
