If you had a diesel, then tire noise wouldn't be an issue.

But, yes I've been able to hear BFG's when they drive by on the highway. Too loud for me.

I'm partial to the Michelin AS or AT series tires. Pricey, but they hold up to gravel roads. Not the best for serious off-road, but the on road behavior is worth it.
