6.0 L Diesel : spare parts
Hello guys,
Just want to know which spare parts (sensors? FICM? others?) you're taking in your 6.0L diesel van on your trips, just in case of known issues...
Thanks !
Claude-Alain

Re: 6.0 L Diesel : spare parts
There are too many to carry. FICM, Vaccuum pump, injectors, HPOP, EGR valve, EGR Cooler, MAF sensor, IPR, sensors, etc. Especially since Fedex can get a part to you in a day or two anyway.
Twice I have been towed 80km to a repair shop in Canada, once 100 miles out of Death Valley and still don't carry spares - and all the spares I could have carried would not have helped in any case.

6.0 L Diesel : spare parts
That's hogwash! Here's a comprehensive list of spares you should always have with your 6.0L in order of importance:
1. Never leave the highway without an extra sense of adventure. Can't tell you how many times the original sense of adventure I hit the trail with turned out to be completely useless 10 minutes into the trip as an entirely different adventure was forced upon me.
2. As much spare patience as you can carry. Luckily, it fits almost everywhere. So, make sure you stash some in every nook and cranny that won't fit something else in the van.
3. A little extra humor. Now I wouldn't get an EB over an RB to fit a bunch, because just a little extra goes a long way.
4. Finally, good hiking shoes and REALLY good socks. In other words, never wear something you wouldn't want to walk out wearing.

Every time I look for this, everywhere is out-of-stock! This is driving me mad, and I'm always worried when I travel without extra (and I never seem to have any humor by the time I'm fixed and packed!)
That said, the only thing I actually carry for the 6.0L is a spare tire. If I wanted to be really safe, I'd drag another SMB behind me on a flat-tow bar.

Might depend on where you are going to travel but I agree with Mike on this. To tell the truth more than likely I wouldn't be able to make the repair anyway. It took two of us over 15 minutes just to get the serpentine belt on. My tool is a Sat phone with numbers to local shops and tow companies that can pull me out of the back country. I can see where a good reader program would be worth having on board. If you are in a spot where a running engine is require to get out, knowing what has failed would help the mechanic and/or if you can make the repairs at least you would have an idea what to ask for.

Re: 6.0 L Diesel : spare parts
Guys,
i think Claude-Alain will (like me) travel a lot outside of the US states. So think out of the square..
Your SAT phone and numbers to a dealer, fedex shipping times and so on will be not very usefull if you are stranded in Bolivia, Central Africa, Asia.

If the plan is for truly remote exploration, then you're absolutely right. One of the best things to carry in that case is a full factory Ford service manual.
Some items should be addressed before starting a major trip like that (oil cooler, EGR cooler or EGR cooler delete, fresh batteries, aux fuel filtration system, fresh extended life coolant, coolant filtration system, serpentine belt, transmission cooler), but others will require carrying a spare (serpentine belt, FICM, fuel filters, air filters, tire plug kit).

Get a 7.3L IDI.
I mean if you have to take a spare van in parts ( ) then maybe it's not the right vehicle to take. I wouldn't want to do a lot of the work on my 6.0L in the driveway, much less in the back country of another continent, and while I don't necessarily trust even the Ford dealers to really understand these engines yet, I'm pretty confident I'm never that much too far from a shop with a diesel expert who does.
But I see the point, taking a 6.0L into South America I can see carrying a spare everything possible, and what is wanted is a list of that "everything". Can't help with that, but I can maybe try to get the train on the track:
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=10801
That's a sticky for listing parts. Keep the discussion of whether or not it's necessary here, and contribute your spare ideas there.
Hope this helps.

Re: 6.0 L Diesel : spare parts
Will you be stranded in Bolivia, Africa, AND Asia?
Or Bolivia, Africa, OR Asia.
Big difference.
