Tire suggestions please
Hi i have 2002 e250 2wd on 8inch rims.
My current tires are toyo open country 2's 225 75 16's e range right now. I have no experience with these tires and was looking for allweather(snowflake rated) or winter tires.
I am looking at nokian rotivas all weather tires as I am in vancouver british columbia.
I have always nokian wrg2 allweaters on wifes car and they are the shxT..
My question is what is the tallest tire size I should be able to safely fit
I was thinking 235/85/16 but the local shop said it was iffy..
Also said 235's rim width was 6.5-7.5 and I have 8's
What do you guys recommend?

Re: Tire suggestions please
I had 235's on an 8 inch wheel and I didn't have any issues. They were only on for a month or so because the tires weren't in very good shape, but they seemed fine on the 8 inch wheel.

GTDad: If you haven't read it already, this may provide some insight:

Re: Tire suggestions please
My stock 245/75R16 just miss the front bumper by about 1/2-inch. Unless my bumper has been pushed back without my knowledge, I would not go any larger than that. And the stock tires are about 30.5 inches in diameter when new. Mine have some wear at about 50,000 miles.
Larger tires compromise safety in some ways, and improve it in others. From a safety standpoint I personally would not go beyond stock size. If by "safely fit" it only means clearance, then safety is not an issue.

Re: Tire suggestions please
On my van clearance is lowest when tires are turned so edge of tread lines up front-to-back.

Re: Tire suggestions please
I'm also in Vancouver. I've had studded Nokian Hakkapeliittas for the past 4 or 5 years in 245/75/R16 (my stock size), and they've been great. I have a stock E350 EB V10, weighing about 8000 lbs.
I've recently gone to 265/75/R16 for my non-winter tires, which add about an inch to the tire diameter, and have had no rubbing issues at all. Speedometer is about 3% slow.
Here are the theoretical tire diameters for the tires discussed here:
225/75/R16 - 29.3"
245/75/R16 - 30.5"
265/75/R16 - 31.6"
235/85/R16 - 31.7"
As you can see, the 235/85 size you are considering is about the same as my new tires, and with the narrower width should have even less potential for rubbing. Of course, YMMV.
Cheers,
Brent
