Yesterday I jumped into the van to do a beer run and when I started it, it was missing and running poorly for the first time ever. I just finished a 10K mile road trip where it ran flawlessly, and now it craps out in my driveway? WTF? I guess somedays you get lucky. Anyway, I continued to the store in hopes it would fix it self, but of course, no luck. Fortunately, it finally set a check engine light. Once I got back and had the proper frosty beverage in my hand, I cycled the Scangauge to find the codes, looked them up on the interweb and found that cylinder number 5 was not firing. Ok, the most likely problem was the coil pack, and it just so happens I had a new spare in the back along with a new fuel pump, fuel pressure gauge, belt and more. Thinking that this shouldn't take long, I opened the hood and spent the next ten minutes just trying to see where the coil for number 5 was. Once I found it, I spent another 40 minutes trying to determine what size socket I needed to remove the bolt. It turns out to be 7mm, and I wrote it on my tool box lid for next time. Getting that bolt out was sorta like trying to thread a needle while wearing boxing gloves.
The old coil looked fine, but the new one went in. The factory manual was useless, the instructions simply said "remove the coil, and install the new one" I got even more lucky though as number 5 is the easiest one to get to, I can't imagine getting 6 or 7 out. Anyway, once buttoned up, were back to running smoothly. Had this happened in the wilderness, I would have had real problems since I didn't have a list of codes to determine what set the check engine light. I'll print one out before the next trip, and I think I'll get some additional spare sensors. I'm glad luck was on my side this time...........
