I think my alternator is dead . I found this thread and was wondering if its a good idea or ok to upgrade the alternator even though I don't have extra house batteries (just the two for a 7.3)? Would it be wise to just upgrade it now or will that hurt the batteries i currently have?

Ideal set up would be 3 100amp hr batteries hooked up to 400watts of solar.

No harm in upgrading. You're not going to hurt anything, but you may have to up size battery cables etc.

Cool deal,

What would I want to be looking for then in upgrade size? Or should i talk to one of the sales people from the recommended sites mentioned before?

I would first figure out what your power needs are and build for that. FICM REPAIR is good once you've done that.

Your alternator is super simple to change out. I've had mine off twice lately. It's three bolts I think.

If you're running solar you may want less alternator. If you're wanting to run a microwave you may want more, etc.
