SMB North is closed down? Covid or what? I have not heard about this.

great, thanks! Nancy is sending me a gasket for the top now that the SMB shop is closed down (for payment of course). So hard to find parts for these suckers.

Sounds like a good plan. Glad to help if I can further. Watch some Youtube videos on Raptor Lining stuff. Other brands of it are Herculiner, LineX, Durabak and many others. It is messy to spray this stuff. Doing it out in your yard not close to any cars or buildings is a good idea. Carefully mask off the van with some drop cloths and tape and don't do this on a windy day. Good luck and have fun!

Hi Scotty - thanks so much for those tips. Our canvas is doing great, so it's just the sanding, filling, etc. I think we might take a crack at it in June when I have time off - also an issue for us. I'm sure there's a rotted wood board under the ceiling too but that's great to know what you use to replace the interior panels. I think we'll likely do a DIY raptor lining on top, keep the top on, replace the gasket & then open up the roof to inspect the water damage from the inside. Thanks for your tips and I've chatted with a few others that have done this as well. laura

Hey there, in a life long ago I redid some tops. I travel for work nowadays and don't even own a van anymore, just no time. If you are in need of a canvas I would talk to Nancy at SMB North (Indiana) if she hasn't retired by now. She knows all but is feisty, be warned! It is quite easy to DIY Raptor Liner on SMB tops. One $100ish kit from Amazon is plenty. You can have tint base mixed to match your van by an auto paint shop if you don't want one of the available colors. It is messy. I have done it with an old EZ up and drop cloths a few times but it's a fun and doable job for an amateur (no offense, I was once too!)
The prep is the biggest part. Lots of sanding, filling and the like on most older tops.

If you do this job I would find better T nuts or top hardward. There used to be a guy here who sold impeccable stuff. I'll have to think of his name. If you don't replace your canvas you'll still have to re-butyl it (how it is sealed on the bottom to the van). It's messy but once again not hard. What is hard is lining the canvas up and getting it screwed down and screwed up (to the top). There is no good way to do this, honestly. I've tried several ways.

If your canvas is OK and not leaking I would be tempted to paint the top on the van. As long as you build up some scaffolding around it and tarp it off well it's not that bad. I have painted a top this way. You can remove the interior panels and use them to trace new ones in your choice of material. The last stuff I used was cheap white paneling from Lowe's and I wouldn't do it again. I would get 1/4" plywood and upholster it somehow.

You'll have more questions I'm sure. Glad to help if I can. Betteryet, start a thread on your project and others will offer lots of good advice.

    Good luck!

Hi Scotty - looking at your pictures of redoing a SMB top. We're trying to find someone around here to do ours. The first owner glued solar panels down & they are peeling as is the clear coat. Do you refinish tops or did you just do yours? The pictures make removing the top look a little tricky. Also, what did you replace the interior roof material with? We personally don't have the garage height to do this inside and found one body shop that does RV work but of course they've never seen a SMB - we're in CT. Laura
