Ah, that would explain things- the butyl I have is closer to silly putty. It works great under washers, around holes, etc. but wouldn't make sense for this application.

I don't think Butyl is the right material for the application, unless you're using it to cover old bracket holes. I think some kind of rubber pad that wouldn't expand, sqeeze out and melt would be...
