I don't think Butyl is the right material for the application, unless you're using it to cover old bracket holes. I think some kind of rubber pad that wouldn't expand, sqeeze out and melt would be better... even if you put 1/2" butyl in, when you're done it will probably be the same size as the 1/8" would.

There must be different types of 'butyl.' The butyl rubber I used is similar to inner tube material - a very dense rubber, that flexes well but doesn't compress much at all.

Ah, that would explain things- the butyl I have is closer to silly putty. It works great under washers, around holes, etc. but wouldn't make sense for this application.
