I just checked mine again. Bracket itself is 3-1/16" (sorry Carr). Depending on what angle you rotate the step to make it level, it will stick out past the bracket. Mine takes up 3-1/4" of space....

dhally, your dimension in question on my Carrs is 3-1/4"
