Either will work, the thicker it is the harder it is to contour to the shape. I usually use water + a little dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray the area, then place the tape on, then wipe / squash...

It's the same stuff. Very strong, doesn't ruin the paint & doesn't slip/slide like normal tape.

3M clear tape that's used to protect paint from chips. That stuff is amazingly resistant to abrasion, it will turn yellow and start to crack after 5~6 years out in the sun though.
