^^^ thanks mr wonder! I have the 13.5 rotors on mine. cant remember if my caliper is dual piston or not. regardless, it doesn't sound like its a mod that will improve much in my situation.

I think Chris sells a spring-perch/shock-mount kit for the Sterlings, so you don't have to buy a pre-prepped axle.
I run across axles all the time just browing craigslist parts. Be sure to search "axle" and also "axel" because it gets posted with the bad spelling more often than not is seems. But bigger wrecking yards are full of them too.

no worries and thanks carringb. your knowledge is vast and well received. appreciate you helping out so many of us round these parts!
checked out chris's kits. definitely look like a good way to go and that's a really good point about spelling axel... I find myself making that mistake every now and again, lol.

The newer calipers are larger, with bigger pistons. All of them old and new are dual piston. But the larger calipers don't flex as much. I'm not aware that they are a simple bolt-on swap for the older spindles. But, even for the old spindles there are lots of aftermarket big-brake options for the F-series.
That all said.... If you aren't having brake-life problems now, you're probably ok. With the older smaller brakes, I cracked rotors frequently from heat, and smoked the pads a few times. But even then the front end is typically traction limited, not brake limited, for actual stopping distance. What I really need is a disc brake conversion on my trailer!

It is a full floater but has drum breaks. You would be losing your disk breaks, maybe ABS, and be stepping backwards if you put it on your rig. Good find for the right rig.

it's got caliper brackets. pretty sure those pads are for the parking brake inside the disc. could be wong though... I'm definitely not an expert.

I'm no expert either...but looks like a lot of axial space between the lug flange and the brake shoes.....dually?

^^^ I think that about all the rear axles I see without rotors on them, but that diff looks huge and it appears super wide so you could be right.

Pretty sure that's an AAM axle from a Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500. It is a disc brake axles, does not look like a dually (hub is too short). If it is, the bolt pattern is the same, but hub size is smaller so only lug-centric wheels would fit. It's a strong axle, but probably not the best fit. I don' think the ABS sensors are the same, and Dodge-spec AAMs use slightly different ratios than the Ford axle do (3.92/4.11 vs 3.73/4.10).

your wealth of knowledge is always impressive carringb. it looks different than other axles I've been looking at so that makes sense. I'll grab numbers off it in the morning anyway and confirm your guess
it's near a dumpster to an old old changing place. thought I'd grab it either way. if nothing else I'll recycle it.

Looks more like a disc brake dust shield than a drum brake backing plate. Shoes are small like a disc brake parking setup.
