Would any of you buy an auction van?

I'm interested in this van as a base:

2008 Ford E-Series Van E350 Super Duty Extended | eBay

It's pretty much what I'm after: V10, extended, cargo, and super low miles. How much is a pre-purchase inspection usually? How do you go about finding someone out of state to do the inspection? This van is in Chicago. Can anyone tell by the photos what this van was used for? The meter in the photos, is that engine run time?

Thanks

BC

I would buy that in a heartbeat. It's basically a new van. Perfect base for a build, power cab, good drivetrain. I don't know what it's worth blue book but as for the condition of the van I have a hard time thinking you could go wrong. There's no way this van has been used in Chicago since 08. There would be rust. It looks perfect but I would like to see more photos underneath.

Read this, especially the 3rd paragraph. Looks like the hours match the miles pretty well. In other words, it hasn't sat idling like an ambo.

I would buy the hell out of that van.

First thing, less than 7k on the clock. V10 tow haul 5 speed w/ NO RSC!! Cruise Control. It had the rear AC/heat unit in it at one time as evidenced by the switch and the hole in the back which means you have the option to rehook it up if you want, just grab one from a junkyard. Aside from the custom stuff the van looks very clean indeed. C4 axle code.....might be 3.73 Limited slip, maybe. But that is good.

The bad is that you will have to remove all the crap they put in it and there will be random holes in your floor you need to fix. That spray foam is both good and bad. Good because it's there, bad because you might need to scrape it out.

I flew to Phoenix with a cashiers check in hand to get my van. There were surprises, but overall I did pretty decent and came away with the van I wanted. I knew that if it wasn't right, I could go back to the airport and go home, but I have no regrets Some of those surprises cost me some cash and time, but that's used vans. I drove my V10 van home at 85mph...

if this van had come up when I was looking, I would have bought it immediately so I could do my own window configuration. If you are looking to do a build, then this one is a bit of a unicorn, you won't see too many like it, and none with that little mileage in that condition.

I'm jealous!!

If you don't buy it let me know, I know someone who might.

And oh yeah, as far as mechanical, there is really nothing that normal driving can do to that engine and trans combo to beat on it. That trans is a beast and even if it idled alot, it's a gasser so it won't be a big deal. I'd say worst case is the injectors might be gummy from sitting, put some cleaner through it, although it may run just fine.

Check out my build thread to see what I did with my used empty V10 EB window van. It's been a journey.

I don't think it spent it's life in Illinois, the CARFAX shows it serviced in Estill, SC in 2009.

If that's the case, take a chance and have a PPI before you lay down your cash.

Probably like mine, fleet vehicle that got auctioned and these guys picked it up and brought it to Chicago. Mine came from Kentucky or something and was bought at an auction and sold to me in Phoenix.

The proverbial all white government van. If I was to do the SMB van thing all over again, with the knowledge I have now, I'd probably start with a van as close to this as I could. But I sure would be tempted to have a drug dog give it a smell over.

And a bomb dog
A cadaver dog
Some random dogs

And a Geiger counter
lots of UV lights

A microbiologist
Nerve agent specialist
And an Alien tissue specialist
You know the basics.

It's nice that its a cargo with power windows and locks. Even had rear AC at one point, but it looks like the motor/fan was removed. Hopefully they left the lines intact and you can hook up the parts to get it going again. Good luck!

Positives:
Doesn't have a receiver hitch
Low miles
Looks clean

Negatives:
About $3500 over book
Out of any warranty
It's obviously sat around a lot (that's hard on seals and sensors)
Every mile you put on it will have a greater negative impact on value
Spray foam on interior
No carfax in add

At $16,500 I would buy, only if it had a clean carfax.
IMHO
