Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
I use a Warn as I wanted a branded item not a cheap one that might not meet its rating. I have used it to pull others out (every time it snows) but never as a anchor for my van.

I replaced it with a Superwinch one from Expedition Exchange (with a locking pin this time) although it is unrated. At $48.00 (vs probably $10-15 for the first one) and with the Superwinch name on it, I assume it is much better.

I got the same item from Expedition Exchange, and the shackle is quite hefty, but I haven't had a chance to use it as yet. I will dig it out from the underfloor storage and see if it has a weight rating on it.

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
If a shackle doesn't have a weight rating on it (it's in tons) then I sure wouldn't use it. Doesn't meet any standards. Bear in mind that a 3/4" shackle will not support the weight of a Sportsmobile. Granted, it's not very often that you need to pull that much, but....
I went with a 7/8" one and sleep better at nite. Besides, it's bigger and looks way cooler then the 3/4".

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
It is pretty easy to find 3/4" shackles with 10,000lb rating and 3/4" shackles with 6,000lb ratings and there are probably others, so within a shackle size the weight rating varies considerably. I remember seeing a 2.5T shackle at the farm store that was less than half the size of one rated like 1T and it's always stuck with me that if it's not stamped on the side (or you don't KNOW the origin for sure) then you can't really guess based on size.

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
I have used the www.ditchhitch.com with great success , this is a take off of a coupler that is now used by the West Germans and US Military . It is rated at 14,000 plus lbs. and Break Strength guaranteed to 69,000 lbs. . I use with a 30,000 rated Strap and or a Snatch rope that is suitable for our vehicles .

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
I really like that, thanks for the link. Who did you purchase it through Greggde? The one I use is rated for something like 6000 lbs and used it to pull Steve out of a situation at DV a few weeks back. He also rigged off my van and asked him to go lightly which he totally understood. But I'm still worried about the receiver and pin itself. I want to beef up the receiver somehow and use the best pin I can find.

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
Dave ,
I purchased directly from the company and received in good order . I once had a shackle fail on our 2nd Quigley and it actually stuck in the sheet metal on the right rear door . This unit is very well made and tested at higher strengths than I would ever subject to , plus all of the others that I have owned were always in need of a Rust prevention .
Greggde
IF YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT SIZE STRAP YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FIT IT INSIDE OF
OF YOUR 2 INCH RECEIVER . THIS ONLY WORKS WITH SMALLER LIGHTER VEHICLE THAT CAN USE 1 1/2 TO 2INCH STRAPS .

Re: Receiver Recovery Shackle
My small strap is rated for 6,400lbs straight lined and 12,800 lbs in a basket formation but I just don't know what the receiver and/or hitch pin can take. I've bent those hitch pins at work using them that way. Not that I'm gonna pull that weight anyway on my SMB I just use winching to help me out, not pull me out.

Hmmm, good thing you did not specify which Steve you are referring to.
