Jage, if you really are concerned about the mailbox trip and short grocery trips, get an electric bike and trailer or an electric cargo bike. There is a company in the south somewhere that makes a fully enclosed trike for around $5K. If the problem is the car, there's not much point in replacing it with something that behaves like a car, costs the same as a car and takes up as much space, even if it does get 84 mpg. An ebike will get you the equivalent of 100's of mpg, cost a hellova lot less and will fit next to the car in the garage. Ebikes are getting really good and are starting to spread.
