Water Hoses - which is which?

I bought my van used and am not sure which hose is for what. Please see the pic. Which hose is for the freshwater and the greywater? Which hose would be the aux. hose that I can use to fill the tank directly if I have no city water connection? This site is a godsend. Many thanks.

Re: Water Hoses - which is which?

Typically the White hose is for Freshwater, and the Gray hose is for Gray water. The shorter White hose is the direct fill hose. If in doubt about the freshwater hose you could purchase a new one. A lot of RV places have a Fabric hose that takes up less room to pack, they also go bad quicker. You can find them at camping world and other RV places

Re: Water Hoses - which is which?

White is freshwater. Anything else I wouldn't trust. I'd smell both white(ish) pieces and possibly replace anyway.

All hose connections are normal, both fillups and the gray water outlet. The gray water hose is not necessary unless you need to direct... I take great pains to never put anything that I need to direct into my gray water tank in the first place- parking over a dump station drain has been sufficient when necessary.

Anyway, a hose spigot is male, city water connection is female, so the long white(ish) hose is for basic fills. The hose end will be male, to connect with the city water valve on your SMB. The inside tank connection for whatever reason is male as well, so with your hose end male and the inside connection male that second white hose being male-male ends is not going to help.

You can reverse your main white(ish) hose to connect to the inside fill and gravity fill from the other end, but you still have to come up with an attachment. for the opposite end, and the hose is pretty long to be messing with gravity filling.

I'd recommend a water thief:

and some female-female, male to male adapters and some shorter hose maybe. You can buy replacement/repair ends in the hardware store if you want to make your own. I carry a small kit with every adapter I can think of, including compressed air to water and a handful of quick connects.

Come to think of it, I need to add some emergency replacement/repair ends to my kit.

Re: Water Hoses - which is which?

At a MINIMUM you should assume the previous owner mixed things up. Give both the fresh water tank and hose (white) a very good cleaning. Flush them well, sanitize them with a good dose of bleach and flush them again. Also sanitize all surfaces of every hose. The real question isn't what hose SHOULD be the fresh water hose BUT what hose DID the previous owner use as the fresh water hose?

I would also recommend keeping a "dirty" hoses in a separate bag/location from the fresh water hose. Dribble, dribble

And close the ends to themselves in storage- keeps dust and bugs out. Has worked well, although I haven't gotten my hoses out for the season yet.

As Jage mentioned, always connect the ends of the hose to itself to keep it sealed.

Both my hoses are white, so I wrote on them with a permanent marker

- WATER

- GREY

Just make sure they are completely dry first.

Re: Water Hoses - which is which?

I don't think there is an easy way to get the hose completely dry. So, I always lift it up as I coil it and let it drain as I go. No more water runs out, but it is wet inside. Then I close it up. Not much can grow in clean water with no sunlight, so I don't worry about it.

But, I do let the water run through the water hose for 5 minutes before I start to fill my tank. If there is anything in the hose it is mostly washed out. Then I fill the tank slower than I rinsed the hose so If anything was able to cling to the walls of the hose it can keep on clinging.

I really don't worry about the gray water hose. I keep it coiled and closed on itself for convenience.

Re: Water Hoses - which is which?

With a reasonably short hose, or super siphon, I grab it near one end, and swing it around like a lasso. Does a really good job of removing just about all the liquid. Just be careful where you do it.
