Just an update. I drilled and ran bolts through my box side swingarm to hold the box in place (sheet metal screws into alumn just weren't doing the trick). Used lock nuts to secure the screws. As such, the nuts are below the swingarm tubes and have caused me to reconsider the whole puck and gusset ideas. The cover on the bumper, as Scatter noted, is not strong enough to support a whole lot of weight, so a puck-type support should be on the most rear upper part of the bumper (not on the cover). Since I have nut that would interfer with the puck when opening/closing the swingarm, it doesn't work for me to attach a puck to that area. Still trying out some different ideas and will post pics if I get one of them to work well.
