In dash GPS/CD/Mp3/DVD recommendations

Did some searching and didn't find much and the post I did find didn't have any follow up impressions. I am looking for a decent in dash GPS/CD/ Ipod compatible unit. I definately want topo maps on the GPS also. Can anyone recommend a unit and their impressions?
Thanks,
Josh

Josh,

We have chosen not to go with a multipurpose unit because we are afraid there will be a compromise to the function or quality from what we could get in less consolidated or individual units.

...but that is just our approach....

A bit worried about that myself. I don't want a Swiss Army knife...does a lot of jobs ok but nothing really well. I was also checking out the Garmin Nuvi 500 for a stand alone GPS.

As far as I know, if you want audio-visual media and topo maps, the only way to do it is to "roll your own" using a computer -- such as a touchscreen tablet or small notebook computer. That's what I do. I use Overland Navigator for my topographic maps.

I use an Alpine for DVD, IPOD, Cameras, Radio. I use a small laptop running Delorme Topo. Overall I have been very happy and no problems in two years. the laptop screen while large is not that bright on battery power so it is best to run off of AC. here is a photo of it and there are more in my album.

You can always get a stereo head unit that does CD/XM/Audio IN/USB/AM/FM/phone interface, and does it well... and then get a GPS that does streets and topo...

We have such an Alpine unit. THen we have a Garmin navigator for the driver and we have a PC with streets and topo and its own GPS antennna for the passenger/navigator.

We left the DVD to be with and work with the TV, although the laptop could play DVDs also.

Re: In dash GPS/CD/Mp3/DVD recommendations

On the note of computers, there is a new hand held unit that just came out by Viiiv http://www.dynamism.com/viliv.shtml#Product=viliv It has a 4.8" touch screen and runs XP. It has GPS built in This has received some very good reviews. It is on my wish list, as it would be portable between vehicles.

Yes, there are lots of new mini-laptops hitting the market that could fit in this niche... I saw an add this week for one that is under $200.
