Re: RV Fuel Cell: Is This the Future of Off Grid Power?
I look forward to reading more about your experience with EFOY cells. I, too, am looking for better ways to power computers and a satellite while mobile.
Have you considered lithium ion batteries ( http://www.mastervolt.com/marine/produc ... li-12-320/)? Compared to AGM batteries, the lithium ion batteries tend to give more power, have longer life, take less space, and weigh less. Of course, they cost much more (the one linked above appears to run around $6400).

Re: RV Fuel Cell: Is This the Future of Off Grid Power?
I don't get it! Anyone who has read any of my posts on this Forum knows I know nothing about anything mechanical and especially about stuff like solar power and the electrical components of a SMB. But I'm wondering how much power one needs in a SMB. I only have one solar panel on the roof of my SMB. I have no idea how much power it generates. But at night I've watched two full-length movies, worked on my computer and used my non-LED lights and never ran out of juice. And, of course, when the sun came up the next day my battery was back at full power in a short time. Could some Lucy please splain to me what one does in a SMB that requires so much power capacity? Maybe I don't get it because I'm in Vegas where the sun shines 345 days out of the year. But it seems some people must camp on the dark side of the moon.
BTW, can anyone look at this picture and tell me what kind of solar panel I have and how much power it might generate? The solar panel was probably put on the van in 2002. It would be nice to know, just in case someone asks. I would like to sound semi-intelligent on occasion when talking about my SMB.

Size and type of fridge makes a big difference. They run all the time and will suck up a lot of power.

Re: RV Fuel Cell: Is This the Future of Off Grid Power?
Ah! That's probably it. I don't use my refrigerator cause I can't stand the noise. I can understand that those people who go on several day or long trips in their SMB would need and want their refrigerator running the whole time. Makes sense! Thanks!

Re: RV Fuel Cell: Is This the Future of Off Grid Power?
Satellite internet, computer, and refrigerator are the biggest power pigs in our design. Devices that sip a little power for much of the day also add up.
If you'd like to see a detailed discussion on solar power estimates for a rig designed for extended self-contained trips, see:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6214&start=21
Regarding refrigerators, the Indel Webasto Isotherm ASU fridge has some compelling power saving features that may also decrease noise during sleeping hours.

Re: RV Fuel Cell: Is This the Future of Off Grid Power?
Okie:
I'd be interested in seeing pictures of your rig, particularly your solar panels. I read your specs regarding your power requirements. I guess I use my rig a lot more casually than some SMB owners, so I have less power requirements. Plus I live where the sun always shines. So I seem to have sufficient solar power for my needs.
Thanks for the interesting info.

My rig is getting built right now. I'll share pictures and details as soon as I have them! I'm planning extended winter travel, so my estimates assume stretches of limited sun.

That is probably the Kyocera KC130TM
Here is the spec sheet on it.
http://www.kyocerasolar.com/pdf/specsheets/KC130TM.pdf
Maximum power is 130 watts, which being in Vegas you probably get pretty close to.
