Re: Synthetic rope winches

How long of a synthetic rope can you get on a Warn M12000? I know they come with 125 feet of steel rope. The Superwinch talon 12.5 SR will take 80' of synthetic. The ability to have a longer rope on the warn might convince me to go with the Warn and just be careful with using the brake.

Re: Synthetic rope winches

Don't necessarily go for the maximum amount of rope that will fit.

From the Superwinch website:
If you still have three layers (not wraps) of rope on your winch while winching, you'll lose 19% of your winch's power. Four layers of rope and you'll lose 32% of your winch's power, and five layers costs you 42%. I attached a copy of the article from the Superwinch website.

A shorter length rope, and carrying a winchline extension for use when necessary, has a lot of advantages.

Re: Synthetic rope winches

Yes I have 100ft of synthetic line. Btw I needed the buy a 5/16" thread x 1/2" stainless button head cap screw to attach it to the drum.

The line should be tensioned in the same way you tension a steel ine, follow the Warn instructions.

There is a note about heat in Thor's install doc, about being careful if you motor the line out.

I have 100 feet of the Masterpull 3/8 superline-XD which has a breaking point of 26,500Lbs loaded on my winch. I had to do the same which was to change the bolt. I also kept the steel rope for an extension but want to replace it with synthetic... maybe one of these days. I carry 3 snatch blocks and several slings of various lengths plus some chains, shackles, rings and hooks.
