I have had the same question as Grumpy Badger. The Wal-Mart version is $19. We have two of those and used them straight for 8 weeks last summer. The Iwatani looks awesome, and I appreciate quality at a price, but I am waiting for one of mine to die before considering spending almost 4 times as much for a stove.

Yeah... I like the idea of those beefy outfitter stoves, but they are overkill for my feeble cooking needs.

As much as I hate to deal with another fuel source... I may try a butane stove. Though I might get a cheap(er) one to start with and see if i like it before spending more. Too bad those Iwatani stoves didn't have a dual-fuel option!

I just picked up a Jetboil stove. It just came in so I'll test it out over the weekend. It just fits in the door galley on my RB50 van. The stove folds & rests inside the large pot. Think I'll be keeping a rag of some sort in there to protect the pot. It comes with a 5 liter pot along with a 10" fry pan & a lid. Runs off of propane. I have also ordered a satellite burner that will attach to it to be used for coffee. This is likely overpriced but it wasn't bad after the dividend. Just hope it lasts me a while.

This is the stove I got:

Just boils are awesome for boiling water. So if you like to eat dehydrated food they can be great. cooking on them is another matter. They are not real stable so it is hard to handle a pan full of food. I have never used the satellite burner.

That one looks better!

This one is supposed to have excellent simmer control on the two main burners. The satellite will likely be full on heat for water. I use an MSR Dragonfly when I solo camp and it simmers decently.

I have been using the 12,000 btu iwatani for some time and have been very pleased with it. They are around $35 and work really well.

Lots of options, mine is one of the smaller ones with a break-apart hinge that lets you put a large pot on one or both burners.
Fitz,

Can one use each of the two halves individually?

Yes. The purpose of the break-apart hinge (the stove can be ordered with or without this feature) is to allow separation of the two halves by up to about 16" (the manufacturer says 12").

In the picture above the hose is stored inside the right-hand half. Here are two more pictures to clarify, note that each half has it's own control knob recessed into the front of each unit.

OK, my first attempt at multiple pictures didn't work! I'll do this one at a time:
