Hi! I’m looking for a solution on some of my smb cabinets. I have a tall wardrobe and the door screws have pulled out of the masonite/particle board stuff they used to make this. Short of remaking the piece out of actual wood, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get the screws to stay in better?
In the last picture you can see what the door screws are going into. I’m not surprised the holes have failed after 100k miles, but I’m looking for a way to hold them in there better.
Have you considered using a 3 or 4ft long (depending on size of door) piano hinge? More screws on both parts (cabinet & door) to allow door weight to be carried more evenly with less stress on each screw.
Drill the screw holes oversize to fit a 1/4" dowel (be careful not to drill through the cabinet). Glue a dowel into place and saw flush. Mark the hinge holes to the dowel and drill undersize for the screw. Works every time.

This is an excellent idea. I will try this and let you know how it went. Thanks!
I had the same problem with what looks to be the same cabinets. I just used very long drywall screws to get deeper into the “wood” (aka glorified cardboard). Drill a small pilot hole first though.

That was my thought. Just need to pull out the 8” long drill bit.
wtlrmtty has an interesting solution, but just using some epoxy putty to fill any screw holes might be easier/simpler... When the epoxy dries, just drill pilot holes and remount the doors.
I also like rallypanam’s suggestion as well as Steve C’s. I would only suggest to use a syringe to inject the epoxy although the two part systems available at the hardware store have the syringe.
Use a toothpick, or whittle a small sliver of wood to fit the wallowed out screw hole tightly, dip in wood glue, shove in hole, trim flush with razor blade, wipe off excess glue, remount hinge. Quick fix.
Particle board or MDF have no business being in used for cabinetry in vehicles. Not vibration or moisture tolerant. But most RV manufacturers use it liberally.
