Probably way cheaper and better structural results, to TomH's line of commentary. Nice welds don't leak, unlike those fiberglass-to-steel bonded joints might!
That might work. You still want to think about 4x4 conversion, lift, suspension upgrades. You might see if SMB would do only that part. There's also Quigley and others. You could also look into just buying the Fox shocks, extra leaf springs, F-550 parts, Dana axles and DIYing all that if you have the tools and knowledge.

They make the low range gear box themselves-their own patented design. You get to choose between differential locks, limited-slip, etc. With the amount of changes they make, you wouldn't want to pay for all this to be done to a worn out body and frame. They do all that same stuff to the new "Classic" on the cutaway as they used to do on the cargo van. And they will still do it to a cargo van if you can bring them one in decent shape.
Actually, they use Dynatrac axles and the Advanced Adapters Atlas II transfer case. At least that is what is on my 2012 SMB.

Yes Dynatrac and an Atlas II were used 2013-2014 cutaway and I'd assume they wouldn't have changed the design.

Last time I asked, it sounded like a fully rigged one with winches, etc., would be close to $150,000.

I was at the factory in Fresno 2 weeks ago. Brian said $160k. I don't remember whether that was the average or one specific vehicle we were looking at.

Wonder where all of the extra cost comes from? I would assume the cutaway is cheaper than the full van. All the rest would be the same outside of the cost for the fiberglass shell. Mine was nowhere near that in 2013 and I had it pretty loaded up.
